An oil change for every schedule visit under Toyotacare. Let’s face it, tire rotation, and checking fluids is nothing. Fluids on a brand new truck shouldn’t vary, not enough time for a leak or burn off, tire rotation is nice but not critical at 5000 miles.

    @Buck Henry

I just used a word in a reply to this thread:

    "realistic"

The Filter Housing removal was frustrating for me on my first-ever oil change on my Sport about 3 weeks ago.

It started out well using the drain valve hose. But when I asked the Auto Hobby Shop clerk for a breaker bar, he asked to see the filter wrench.

That's when he suggested using the over-sized socket for a better grip.

Sometimes we need to be lead to another option we weren't thinking about before taking some drastic measures! lol

Here's the drain valve hose in-use before I removed the filter housing.

They went back to the canister style filter for the 2022 tundra. I prefer the canister style over the cartridge.

Oh, the oil cap comes off to make the draining smoother/quicker.

Each time after my ToyotaCare visits, I opened the hood and did a quick visual inspection.

Considering I have this oil cap, I'm gonna check every time.

When my oil filter canister is on tight I simply call my husband to help. He brings the half inch ratchet and the housing comes right off. After 15 oil changes haven’t had an issue yet.

My mechanic couldn’t get the cap off last time… broke a ratchet, tried an impact gun, no luck. i ended up changing the oil but not the filter. What a joke.
I will be bringing it to toyota next change and let them break it. where do I get the aluminum one? Anyone have a link?

Mine cracked while tightening. Replaced it with an aluminum one and don't overtighten. Use a breaker bar to loosen. It comes right off.

When replacing the cap, lubricate the O-ring with fresh oil not used dirty oil. I had an old Chevy Impala with the traditional spin on canister. I had a lot f trouble getting it off until a mechanic friend told me about the issue of using fresh versus used oil on the rubber seal. Night and day differance in ease of removal. Make sure the cap doesnt crossthread when starting it, proper torque and fresh oil on any mating surface will make the next oil change a breeze.

Honestly, this issue is pure overloading the plastic flange with too much torque. Folks are able to remove the canister easily after they dremel that flange off.

Definitely lube any seal in contact with fluids using the same fluid as in the system.

#1 They won't. Most dealers buy bulk unbranded oil in 55 gal drums and the cheapest filters they can buy.

#2 I made an account @ Toyota.com/owners/my-vehicle and I list my oil changes, mileage at the time and the condition of the oil and filter. Any other notes I want to add there too.
