I know for a fact I DO NOT want a $40 K&N high airflow filter under those conditions....

No, they are not made in the same factory as Frams.

Fram makes Fram, Pennzoil, and MicroGuard... there are a couple of others but they are not widely available.

The stock Toyota filter used to be comparable to Purolator, and 10-15 years ago was likely made on the Purolator line, but that seems to have stopped, possibly with the Purolator/Bosch merger.

Filtration media area - Fram uses significantly less media than most other manufacturers.

Seal quality - Fram's bypass seal has been shown to leak... this allows unfiltered oil to bypass the filter media even when the filter should not be in bypass.
Also, the anti-drainback valve leaks, which reduces oil available during cold startup on engines such as the newer 4.0 using the inverted filter. This is a non-issue on the 2.7.

And that's not even getting into the cheap cardboard endplates glued to the end of the media.

But at least it's better than the Champion Labs (Supertech, AC Delco, STP) "E-Core" design, which glues fiber endplates to the media, and it's wrapped around a cheap plastic cage center core support that has been shown to collapse. At least Fram still uses a steel center core.

Today's Fram is not the Fram that we grew up with in the 70s.
It was a good filter before Allied Signal bought the name.

And even if that were true, there's no reason NOT to use Toyota OEM filters when they are available at less than $4.50 a copy online with shipping (in quantity, shipping is the greater of 10% of the order about or $10).

Read above... TWENTY OEM filters... enough for 100,000 miles. $88 shipped.

    All "0w" oils are synthetic.
