I realize this is an old thread, but I wound up here and someone else might yet. This was my first time doing an oil change on my daughter's new-ish 2018 Tacoma Off-Road. I bought the fairly fancy wrench for it with four slots. I just put my regular 3/8 socket with extension on and thought I would just twist it off. Not even. I then grabbed a short piece of conduit as a cheater. Went out maybe 15-18" and gave it pretty good torque and it didn't budge. This is when I came here. Based on the other answers, I ordered an OEM metal oil filter cap from Amazon for $22. I waited until it came in before I tried again to get the plastic cap off. I tried with my impact driver up to it's highest torque setting and no luck. I tried again with my socket and cheater. Then I brought out the big guns and got the 1/2" battery-powered impact wrench. i hit it at the lowest setting and nothing. Then I went to the middle setting. Still nothing. Hesitant to really give it the beans, I decided to go back to a socket and cheater. This time, it came off with almost no force (the impact must have loosened it. Got the plastic cap off, installed new O rings on the new metal one, installed a cartridge, and put it back on. Thanks to this thread, I knew I could give it a lot of torque without breaking the cap.

Just went through this and pro tip, a heat gun is your friend. I’ve done plenty of oil changes but never had a stuck cap before. I guess today my Taco woke up and chose violence. Once I realized it was stuck, I was really nervous about over doing it so I kept going ever so slightly harder with a breaker bar. Gingerly tried an impact gun but didn’t want to break anything.
Finally I grabbed a heat gun and put it to medium, heated the cap for a solid 5 minutes. Came off without a hitch after that. Totally bizarre though as I’ve never encountered this over the last couple dozen oil changes.

I just wanted to add my experience here too after shearing a 3/8 extension trying to get this cap off.

A heat gun was the tool that finally worked for me. I heated it up for a few minutes and tried with no luck. Then I heated it up for about 5 more minutes and it finally turned.

I guess that the Toyota dealerships don't own torque wrenches. I also noticed that they didn't add the seal on my drain plug and they were also relying on a stupid amount of torque on the drain plug to keep the oil inside.
