I own a 2012 V6 fourdoor prerunner. I made the mistake of messing up the thread on the oil filter housing when i was installing the filter, so she leaked out most of the oil. I drove for about eight miles and then i lost all power and she stopped. My question is at what temperature does the engine shutdown and what damage comes to the engine when she is forced to shutdown? The oil used is a 5 w 30 API Service SN Pennzoil. Also when it comes to the oil filter housing, must I replace the whole unit or can I only replace the male where the filter screws in to?

Sounds like major engine damage to me if she stopped running. The last thing I would worry about is the housing itself.

When you say stop running, you mean like it went into fail-safe mode?

I have not had an issue with the 20 oil changes or so I have done on my 2012. I think the issue might had been underlying user error when changing out the filter. Not insulting the OP. I am just saying.

Nothing to lose at this point. Fix the housing, fill the oil and see how she runs. Unless you're still under warranty. If so go to the dealer explain what you did and they might inspect it for free.

does turning tires to black wall out count? How bout added snug top rebel.
You're probably fine, truck has a sensor for low oil pressure and shuts off as soon as it senses no oil pressure. Also, the filter should be cross threaded, the housing might still be ok, I'm assuming the metal on the filter is weaker than the metal on the housing, also usually it's the female side that gets torn up, the male side can usually be repaired with a small file. Either way, repair or replace oil filter housing, refill with oil and hope for the best. Good luck!

I agree the computer probably shut it down before any major damage was done. I've seen threads here where dealerships have forgot to put oil into a truck and when the owner started to drive off it's shut down. Dealership always just offers an extended warranty because they know the computer shut it down before any major damage was done. In your case it just took longer because there was oil that was leaking out vs being left out. Get the housing changed, fill it up and have it evaluated if you need the peace of mind.

Yes, they do, but I guess the short trip isn't enough to trigger it. Usually, from the threads I've seen where folks here in the forums have experienced it, it's when they start up and start to leave the dealership that it shuts off. By that time it's been started twice and although each time, the drive time is not very far, I guess it's finally enough. I would suspect there is probably still oil up in the channels at the first start up, so for a moment the engine is moving oil. Probably just about long enough for someone to pull it from the bay out to the waiting area. Then the owner hops in starts it up and gets to the end of the lot and it dies.

Over all, I wouldn't want to subject my engine to it. But those who have had it happen, say everything seems normal afterwards, and they seem to be mostly content with the dealerships free extended warranty to cover any future issues that might result. In the OP's case, he had oil in it, so as he was loosing it, up to a certain pint he still has oil pressure. I would assume that once the pressure dropped to a certain point, the computer kicked in and shut it down. In an older car this would not happen, and the shut down would likely be the result of irreversible damage.
