What ft.lbs are you guys tightening these oil filter housings at? I recently did my first oil change and used a torque wrench at 18ft.lbs but it surely did take much until it beeped. I checked the filter housing last night seems to have a damp appearance to it on the plastic. I’ll check again tonight and maybe torque it down more if you guys suggest a higher torque spec? Yes the o ring is deff in the correct location I triple checked that when installing it.

    Yeah.
Cap is 18, plug is 10. I would not go more than that.

Is it damp or isn't it ?

It seals on the o-ring. Over tightening the housing will not help weeping. Did you lube the o-ring before installing?

Yeah I wiped some clean oil around the oring. I gotta get a better look at it. It could just be from wiping oil on the oring that big of seepage down through the threads

Zero ft lbs. Tightness has nothing to do with seal of the internal oring.

should be no seepage past the o-ring. perhaps the "wet" is from what you put on the o-ring

If you put more torque, you're risking breaking the o-ring. If the thing continues seeping, I'd take it a part - I know, another oil change - and inspect it.

In general, in o-ring fittings you want to maintain the integrity of the ring. It should come on not twisted and seal within the torque specs so it still stays plump. Check out the attached doc for common o-ring failures.

Should be able to just snug up the filter housing till you feel it bottom out, and stop there. It doesn't need to be socked down any tighter.

You don’t really need a torque spec and a torque spec is not what seals it. The housing threads in with about the same resistance all the way down to where it hard stops. That’s it.

Oil is glossy. Perhaps you are seeing oil on the housing from your hands handling it during the change? Wipe it dry and monitor.

Use brake clean on the housing to clean things up and check in a few days.

    These^^

I found the stopping point to be pretty obvious even with my dumb ol' crafstman socket wrench. Its the one thing I like over the can filters seen on other cars - easy to snug, and easy to remove.

If you don’t put a good amount of oil on the o-ring, it can start to bind up in there and cause a torque wrench to click at 18 ft. lbs. way before the canister is in all the way. Lube the o-ring and it’ll turn a lot easier. Forget the torque wrench and just feel it bottom out where it’s supposed to and snug it.

Same for my craftsman socket wrench. You can easily feel when the housing threads stop.

I oil the o-ring and the threads. Easy on-- easy off.
