Ok here is a question? Is there a oil filter housing with out the drain plug ? Aftermarket. I find it silly to drain the filter before removing the rest of the housing . Is there a reason for it ?

I'm not aware of one. I guess there's no reason you have to use it, even if you have it, but the reason is to reduce the mess. Draining the filter housing into the drain pan means you're not trying to balance a metal or plastic container which is full-to-the-brim with oil, and hopefully avoid making a large mess.

    don't think so.
the first time i did my own oil change i went to undo the drain gizmo and the entire housing turned so i just removed the housing and have done so ever since. once the oil starts running down the side of the housing i just let it drain into my bucket.

I'm a dealer tech, we don't drain the filter, we crack the housing loose and let it drip, then remove the housing full.

I rarely touch the drain valve.

There are sideways mounting units that lack the drain, but you may need to swap the filter support tube as the vehicles they come from use larger filters. I have some here if you are interested?

I wouldn't either if I had a lift where I could stand full upright under the truck.
But since I lay on my back and try to jockey everything around from removing the skid plate to filter exchange, draining the housing first helps a lot.
