Does the 2017 Tacoma V6 have a spin on or cartridge type oil filter and where is it located? I did not see either when I took a quick look underneath but did I also did not crawl all the way under as I should have.

Sorry to tell you it is a cartridge type and you have to remove the front spoiler plate to access it. I bought a Baxter Performance adapter which allows me to use the earlier spin-on filters (wix # 51348). Planning on installing it as soon as weather warms up a bit.

Google Baxter Performance. Costs $200 and part number is TS-101-BK. Pricey but over the life of the truck should pay off. Not to mention the PITA of the cartridge.

Did you replace the skid plate with no access opening as well?

No, just 4 bolts to remove it. No big deal.

Since oil travel is "longer" now, did you get any low oil pressure alarms, or any problems with the in-between adapter? One disadvantage I see is you lost the poke valve to drain a bit of oil before removing the canister.

    Too few to list.
I was looking through their website and the only issue I see with their spin on filter adapter is that when the spin on filter is too tight, the adapter will turn along with it. They should had at least made the adapter hexagonal so it can be gripped with something to prevent both adapter and filter from turning. Toyota went from super simple to total pain the ass with these cartridges. At least the 2TR-FE is still a spin on style.

I have been wondering when and if someone was going to come out with an adapter for the use of 'normal' oil filters. may have to check this out. Thanks.

Installed Baxter adapter and WIX 51348 today and changed to Amsoil Signature Series oil. Spin on filter leaves plenty of room between bottom of filter and skid plate. Installs very easy with 1" 6pt socket and 12mm hex. Used some loctite on nipple so it won't thread out with filter. Oil was rather dirty after 4,800 miles and don't know why anyone would go 10,000 before a change. Also runs much quieter but found that every time i switched to Amsoil.

Just because you think it's dirty, doesn't mean it's not doing its job or actually has plenty of life left. The only way to tell is to send a sample in to get it analyzed. Even dino oils can go 5k+ without issues. Synthetics can definitely go 10k miles, and in some cases, much longer.

I have over 7.5k miles on my oil and won't be changing it until 8000 something.
Yea I use synthetic but Ive had new trucks that Ive put new oil in and soon after its black.

Like Physcle says you cant go by looks.
And as long as the manufacturer says 10k and you do it at that or less, your doing the job for any warranty issues.

With the top of the line synthetics today, - going 10k is a walk in the park now.
3-4k oil changes is back from the old high school days............

    :fingerscrossed:

    What he said!!!

I've done the blackstone laboratory thing on several previous vehicles. Pretty impressive what Synthetics can do in certain engines. Definitely worthwhile if you're curious how your engine oil is performing! :)

Well, each to his own on mileage to change oil. The thing that makes the difference for me on this, is how noticably quieter the motor runs with the Amsoil. I have an annual account with Amsoil and buy the oil for less than $8/qt so I'll stay with 5K/change.

There are those that even still adhere to the 3k mile OCI, as the Jiffy Lube employees and members of OPEC look on with $ signs where their eyes should be.

You're definitely welcome to do what you want. But even Amsoil says go 25k miles (or 1 yr) OCI.

I change all my vehicles at 5K intervals, easy to remember, and piece of mind.

Yep! No one every ruined their engine by doing early oil changes. I only drive about 5,000 miles/year so mine are annual and I always do them myself to assure filter is not too tight and drain plug is not stripped. I don't trust ANY dealership to do the work.

You are welcome! It is really a quality piece of equipment. I was more than satisfied with it. Also top of the line WIX spin-on is about $4 less than same level cartridge. Only other thing I forgot to mention was the metal clip which retains the canister just need to be pulled off with a small pair of pliers so adapter can be threaded in.
