Mike makes a good point, too bad you can't prime these engines like you could with small block chevys. Or can you? prolly be too much trouble!

So my next question: At what angle should I mount the filter and hoses?

The stock angle of the filter on the block is about a 45 degree downward, which makes a mess when you unscrew the filter due to the oil draining out.

I'm thinking that the hoses should angle downward and below the stock filter location so all the oil doesn't drain back in the oil pan. There would still be oil in the hoses and filter for Option 2.

See my drawing, I'm thinking Option 2 might be best. Any suggestions?

It is a bitch to get a hand on the filter to remove it but once its off and the mess is there I just spray the area with some degreaser and rinse with the water hose done.

You can!! you just need a timer to keep the engine from starting before the pump is on and pumping pressure. soon as the timer is up pump off engine start. Its used in older aircraft engines.

Does matter which ..you need a anti drain back in the the line that will solve your dry start problem. You could use a pressure switch inline at the engine. When engine starts it opens( do to pressure) and engine off ( no pressure) it closes keeping the oil from draining back.

Im planning on doing this in the future why i have done all the research before hand. :D:D

Im also doing a remote oil change also.which is less mess. and no getting on the ground anymore. Also used in aircraft and in marine also.

My anti drain back valve is called gravity. I'm pretty sure that will work well for this particular make and model truck.

Hey you guys with 3.4s and oil spilling everywhere!!!

Before changing your oil just stab the top of the filter with a screwdriver/ice pick and the oil will drain back into the block.

Then drain the pan, and the oil from the filter will mostly come with it.

Works all of the time, 60% of the time.

That's a good trick. You all are providing some great alternatives to a remote filter, and now have me second guessing my purchase. It's shocking to me that not too many of us have installed one of these.

    I'll take a little oily mess everyday for a V6 over a 4 banger.

I agree that its a pain to get the oil filter off and on, but I will just deal with it and keep things like Toyota designed.

I despise the mess that it makes on my skid plate and garage floor, I am defiantly trying that stabbing trick if I remember next oil change.

It's a quote from the movie Anchorman I'm guessing. Probably saying that it works most of the time but not necessarily always.

I just did my first oil change so maybe my feelings will change in the future but.. I just put an empty oil bucket on my front support above my grill I put a paper towel behind the filter and did not spill any oil.

Edit: I cant read. Thanks Impulse-

Either way the phrase is stupid so please don't start talking like that. The shit young people say (and do) these days is embarrassing.

On the '95, it's best to go through the wheel well and unscrew the filter. Plus, with my new headers there's even less room to reach from the top.

ah... so yer like one of those turds that rips the engine bay's mud guard off
just to make an opening, to more easily reach the oil filter at that entry point.
...and then it's left flapping with the wind when yer done

Because lazy fucks rip the engine bay's mud guard off to do this...
I now refuse to let businesses like Pennzoil (and others), change my oil.

IMO... techs that destroy something because they're lazy or rushed...
should be made to pay for fucking up that engine bay's mud guard.

If I do have an oil service done...
    I check that shit now...
and if the flap is fucked up and unable to be re-secured...
That business will be buying me a new one.

Now I suppose yer gonna tell me yer ever so careful
and never tear that when you remove that to gain entry ?

I've done the wheel well method but I've forgotten to turn the wheel a few times so I usually take the skid plate off and and go from below as Bluepearl does.

Someone else on TW gave a great tip - to go after the filter with a few plastic bags - I use two, to catch the oil as you loosen the filter. I make little to no mess. This is a 2.7 though...
