oil filter removal 3rd gen toyota

i did first oil change on my 19 DCOR tacoma V6 and have a couple questions.

1) Do you have to remove that clip mounted on the side of the oil pump
before turning plastic oil filter housing ?
I didn't some say remove ?
2) are you suppose to push in and twist that plastic drain peace in
toyota oe filter box ?
i pushed it in some oil came out then i unscrewed filter and it made a mess
as oil splashed out.

 

Pull the clip back, don't remove the clip. Once it is unscrewed enough it won't catch. It is only there as a security measure if the housing tried to work loose.

For the drain hose, you have to fully screw it in. It will drain all of the oil. If some oil came out, and it was kind of a small trickle, you didn't have it seated all the way.

 

Personally, I have never touched the clip. It has not proven to be a problem on my Tacoma or my wife's Rav4.

Drain the pan before doing anything with the filter. Once the pan is drained, you remove the filter housing plug and push the plastic drain (with a hose attached to it) into the drain to drain the filter housing. Once the filter housing is drained, you can remove the filter housing with less mess. It sounds like you were missing the hose on the plastic piece.

 

What does that clip engage on?

 

when i did my oil change, i looked for the answer to that question. the answer is: nothing, AFAIK and from what i could tell by looking at everything, it only serves to prevent the oil filter housing wrench from seating all the way onto the housing. It is literally an added feature to discourage DIY maintenance, as it is a bit of a PITA to remove.

 

2) Did the same thing my first time. Second oil change, I let the plastic piece run out as much oil as possible. Not nearly as much of a mess, but still a little messy. Thanks gravity.

 

I agree. I don't think that clip is used to prevent the housing from backing off.

 

Did not even know there was a clip, just unscrewed it and never came in contact with a clip.

 

Just to circle back this to what is in the Service Manual.



Myself given the design for the clip, I cannot see how it would stop the cap from spinning if it already managed to loosen itself.

 

Someone said that the filter wrench, when slipped over the filter housing goes between the clip and the housing until.the housing comes unscrewed. It normally does serve to keep the housing from loosening and loosing.it.

 

idk about yours, but at 2,400 miles the clip on mine was not contacting the filter housing at all, (meaning it is not even providing spring tension to prevent the housing from loosening), there is no tab or extrusion that it would interfere with if the housing were to rotate. so unless there is some witchcraft at work, it does nothing to prevent the filter housing from rotating, it literally just gets in the way of the filter wrench, I am using a motive X wrench, not the toyota one.

 

It depends. If you use the Toyota tool as pictured in the SM, it only engages the flats on the lower portion. The tool that I bought engages both the flats and the flutes on upper portions. For that to work, I had to flex the clip pretty good.

 

Maybe it uses plastic Eddy current.
