3.4 L V6. Oil change this weekend. Every time I've done it in the past when I take off the oil filter it spills oil everywhere. I go in through the drive side wheel well.

I follow what's laid out on this thread - https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/3-4l-5vz-1st-gen-oil-change-guide.48136/

I saw on there that cutting a 2 Liter bottle about 4 inches from the bottom works for catching oil.

If this a good strategy? Anyone else do anything special to mitigate this mess?

    Oil leaks
Poke a hole and drain it. I put cardboard down before I change fluids, then spray off whatever drips with carb cleaner.

Can always use a Quart plastic milk jug with the bottom cut out, loosen and catch the drippings and filter.

You can get moldable 'funnels' that work well for odd stuff. I just use some brake cleaner when done.

It's a mess for sure, I pull my skid plate when I do an oil & filter change and always plan a trip to the closest car wash pretty quick afterwards. I'd rather spray the bottom of my engine with water than leave the oil. Also with the skid plate off I can have a look see about any other potential problems.

I just wrap the oil filter in a heavy-duty trash bag while I’m taking it off, easy-peezy and no drips!
