I bought my 2019 TRD Off-Road in May of 2019. But about 3500 miles in I started to notice a ruff idle at stop lights, while parked and running, and sometimes even on start up.You could definitely feel and notice it in the cab and sometimes you could even visibly see it in the engine bay when I opened the hood, especially after long and or hard driving (then again I drive everything hard.)

If this was a 10 year old truck I wouldn't have cared that much, but with these symptoms at such low miles and being new, was so annoying to the point of I almost thought about trading it in for a different truck (would have gone with just a sport this time around) I decided to take it in to the stealership to have them take a look at it. Of course they could no duplicate the symptoms, and sent me on my way.

It got even worse around 5000 miles and I took it back in again. This time they had one of there senior techs go on a test drive with me. Plucky must have known it was in trouble and of course it ran just fine with us both on the test drive together. But they still looked at it for the day and gave the same report.

Enter about 7000-8000 miles and the weather starting to get cooler, and I noticed that Plucky wasn't running ruff any more, and that the symptoms seemed to have corrected themselves. I figured it was the weather change, and had something to with ambient air temperatures and the engine liking the cooler temps. I would continue to monitor it once the weather began to warm come this spring.

Then one day the tech next to me and the parts guy were talking about factory oil filters (we were discussing Valve Control issues on a BMW and how the tech fixed it with our supplied OEM filter and oil) and I made mention of how we used to solve Honda V-tech control solenoid codes/symptoms simply by changing the oil and install a factory filter. At that moment the tech asked "hey speaking of ruff idle and Variable Valve timing, hows your truck been running?"

Then it hit me. At mile 3500 I changed my oil on a weekend and bought a WIX oil filter (not dogging WIX, they are actually really good filters) but at mile 7000 I had our parts guy order me a filter for my oil change that I was getting ready to do the coming weekend, and he got me a Toyota one. It was about that same time I noticed the symptoms were no longer present.

Moral of the story, buy a factory oil filter and use quality full synthetic oil. We use Castrol in the shop I work at because we only work on Euro and Subaru cars. Given the nature of the vehicles we work on we also only use very high quality after market parts, or factory parts not accessible to the public like the kind you can buy at your local parts store, which is why I ended up with a OEM filter and not a aftermarket one.

So if you have been having this same issue, or if you do your own oil changes make sure you purchase an OEM filter. They are specifically designed to be able to work with the pressures necessary for today's modern engines that have variable valve timing (as most do in some form or another these days).

    As they say "Lesson Learned."

Hope this helps some of you out there in taco land.

Nice story. And possibly quite true.

I did an oil change on my Taco @ 5000 miles (I know, I know - waste of money bla - bla - bla). But I just simply went to wally-world and purchased good quality products. Funny thing is - I recently had my 10K service at the dealer. And I noticed that the Taco liked the WW products better than the OE products. Since going back to OE oil & filter, I've noticed more engine noise and slightly rougher idle. I'll continue to use the FREE services from the dealer. But I'm looking forward to my next oil service @ 15K.

This is like the guy who thought gear oil change in his 2019 made it drive nicer.

I think you might of miss-read. I was advocating for OEM filters, but hey if you want to cheap out on the life blood and longevity of your vehicle then your free to do it. I can't tell of all the cars of I have had to do major repairs on (to include engine replacements) because people don't change their oil regularly, and use inferior products....That being said, I am surprised your truck runs better on the wally-world stuff than not. Then again I don't shop at wally-world so I wouldn't know what they have to offer in oil change products. Good on you for at least changing your oil every 5k. I'm a bit on the over-zealous side of things and always change my oil at 3500 no matter what the manufacturer recommends.

LOL..Plucky is the name of my truck. Because he just "plucks" his way along and up the trails. It just kind of came to me one day, when I was out driving on some very un-maintained forest service roads.

Cleaning cycle...do tell...I didn't think Toyota did that, Then again my last taco was a 96 :) I knew other manufactures did though...Looks like I have some researching to do.

Make sense though since direct injection engines are very prone to carbon build up. Now that we don't have fuel running over the valves on the intake stroke, which also cooled them down by about 20%. I know with the VW GDI engines we have to walnut blast them as early as 25k, because of carbon build up. I have also had to replace engines at 65k on them and mini's as a result of their eff'd up direct injection system.

At idle our trucks switch to the cleaning cycle, specifically to prevent any carbon build up.

These engines are port and direct injection. The port injection is primarily for the cleaning cycle. It is noticeable at idle by the clicking noises. Especially after driving and stopping at a light.

Our cartridge style filters are just plain filter media. I doubt that different filters could cause a rough idle.
I doubt that a difference in bypass valves in the spin-on filters would cause a rough idle.

No, I didn't misunderstand what you were trying to convey. I have life experiences too. And this is a public forum, so -----

That's very funny. I DIY all of my services (that I am capable of doing myself).

Oil and Filter purchased from the Parts Department = ~ $25
    Oil and Filter purchased from wally-world = ~ $45
    Cheap Out - Definitely Not
Better or Worse - Definitely Debatable.

Not really what this is about - -

This isn't uncommon. I have a Harley that does the same thing. And have many reports form different sources with same experiences.

There is a big world outside of OE products. Some ARE actually better.
