Is there any chance you could provide the equivalent .pdf document for the 2TR-FE engine?
Or maybe a link to the source (if it is available to the public)?
    Thanks!!

FYI, my engine is a 2017. I don't suspect any difference.

I found the V6 document in the forum and saved it. It is possible that there is a I4 document in here somewhere. It might be in the second gen as I believe the engine is a carry over.

Thank you all thus far for your replies. After having read the PDF of the fuel system cleaning, I'm still not thoroughly convince that it was just the fuel cleaning cycle. Unless the cleaning cycle does it at every single stop. It may have compounded the issue, but not the issue entirely. Plus it wouldn't explain why the symptoms went away with the oil change. For now I'll just keep monitoring.

The cleaning cycle is based on the type of driving demand. If you drive where the the direct injection system is primarily used then the cleaning cycle will be more frequent. In my experience, the cleaning cycle comes on for a varied amount of time at 95% of stops.

Now if you did have another issue that clearly disappeared after you changed the oil filter, then maybe you had a bad filter. It isn't impossible. I have put brand new filters on at work that had pin holes in them and then drew air into the diesel injection system. Then you are left scratching your head trying to figure out the poor power after a service.

I have used Fram and Mobil 1 filters in my truck with zero issues or complaint.

Just reaching out with a thought, you stated when it got colder the rough idle stopped. The Tacoma’s run a little rougher with the A/C running. Could smoother idle in colder weather be due to A/C not on?

No, it has to do with fuel delivery - direct, port or either.

And what parameters does the ECU use to determine cleaning vs Port injection?

    Temps- intake, coolant- for sure.
I observe startup is always port, then depends on engine load and speed it would call for direct or either.

So colder ambient could affect cleaning?

Yes. On these truck lots of things are linked to the coolant temp.

You were suggesting that a/c status was playing a role.
"...Could smoother idle in colder weather be due to A/C not on?"
What do you think is a coolant?

I sir was only suggesting a path or possibility. That’s what this is all about.
My past experience has shown this to be true.

No I don't think this has anything to do with it, I tested it both A/C off and on, and the symptoms still continued to be the same. Also with the colder temps, and high moisture content in the air where I live, I have the foot/de-frost setting on 95% of the time. Which still activates the A/C cycle because of the setting being on de-frost. I did think about this at first/ I change the oil again this weekend using OEM filter and my usual 0-20 Castrol Magnatec oil. Will continue to monitor and see what happens in a few months with the weather begins to heat up again.
