I was changing my oil the other day and the last guy who did it put the filter on too tight. I really had to struggle to get it off this time.

The idiot was me, but I only used my hand last time.

Searching for a filter wrench is only bringing up the 6 cylinder canister filter wrench in assorted varieties.

Anyone got a recommendation for the regular spin on oil filters?

    Thanks!

I like the springy spider finger one for the smaller filters that goes on the 3/8" ratchets.

Ok, that's a good answer. Thanks for your help.

    Ordered the filter wrench.

I use the YZZD3, but its the same fitment as the other filters, its just taller so there is more filter material.

Nothing beats these cam style filter wrenches for the old school metal spin on filters. This tool will literally crush the outer can if the filter is stuck on there and you keep turning it.

Can use it for lots of other stuff also.
I bought a set of 4 of different sizes and use them all the time.
Each one adjusts to different sizes.

Oh yeah, and you can even use one to hammer a screwdriver through the side of the filter, and use that to twist it off if it's super stubborn.

No !!! to the screwdriver. I have seen the canister tear off leaving the filter base still tight as heck and now not much to hang onto...

But if you insist, have at it...

This kind of thread is also why I cringe when people use a torque wrench to install the filter; you just know it's going be hard to get off later.

I use the socket type oil filter wrench like these. I got mine years ago and don't remember where I got them. Mine are actually cast Aluminum. They have worked great for me for years.

Since you’re complete, I’d just comment the gorilla who tightened the oil filter(you) has aged and lost hand strength…. Just kidding

Clearly I am stronger on the concrete laying on cardboard than I am with the truck on the lift reaching over my head.

Its the only difference I can think up.

The heat cycles and time always make it tighter to remove. That's why if you use a wrench and torque it when putting it on, oftentimes the filter will just crush / slip in the wrench when you take it off.

The filter should have instructions on how much to tighten, something like 1/4 to 3/4 of a turn after the gasket contacts the surface. (4.0 filter was 3/4 of a turn, which was a lot). Or if you're comfortable with it, I would tighten it as much as I could by hand (up to 3/4, but no more), then you can usually get it off with the wrench or even by hand again.
