Ya... didn't seem he drove it long enough, but it seemed to drain fast enough.

If I can't get it up to full operating temp and hold it there for a half hour or so, I just drain it cold. Oil is plenty clean on the dipstick when I check it next refueling.
Makes getting the filter off a lot more pleasant too. Hate burning my arms on the exhaust.

But for the most part, it's an okay video and shows that it's so easy a caveman can do it.

Access is really not that much worse than the 22RE, it's just up a little higher with an exhaust pipe wrapped around one side.
Can barely reach it from above... it's pretty well hidden under the manifold (22RE had the intake on this side, 2.7 the intake is on the left).
The shield is a cast part of the filter mount.
I would imagine if you wanted to be creative you could machine it off, but the YZZD3 filter (specified for the 4.0) is just a hair longer, works beautifully on the 2.7, and extends an inch or so below the bottom edge of the shield.

I can get my hand on it from 3 directions... reaching STRAIGHT up from under it is a direct shot. It's also a good way to drain hot oil straight down your arm.
It is possible to reach it from behind the wheel... but really no point since you aren't going to extract the can from there.
Finally, visibility is good from behind the crossmember, as shown in the video. If I need to use the wrench to remove it, I'm reaching through there to swing it through the available 4" arc.

I've had my share of those... not really where it spins, more where it just pops off the end. It can be as bad as a Phillip's screw.
Then there's the opposite problem. Filter breaks loose, you want to get the tools out of the way before turning enough to release the flood.... and it's jammed on there.
That was always a constant problem with the little cans on my wife's Rav4.
Try an Amsoil EAO filter... No flats :p

The kits aren't that much, but reviews seem to indicate that out of the box, the hoses and fittings aren't up to snuff.
Replace the hoses and fittings with AN hardware and they're good to go... the problem them becomes mounting.

You don't want a long run, and you don't want a major "elevation" change because you want the pump to "see" the filter in the same location.
There might be a good spot to mount it along the frame, but that would only be an option for street trucks.

If my '08 had the ABS computer on the left side of the engine bay, I'd mount it on the passenger wheelwell, but the right side of the engine bay is packed.

As for my 2.7 it was hanging just like the video, with that stupid little shield. But the truck was 4wd, and i remember it being mor crowded (im not sure why, accept i know for a fact the manifold is differen on some)

Sticking a screwdriver through it was pretty easy, and i usually overtighten them myself, bad habbit i have i guess. There was enough room to stick the screwdriver in and break it loose. then id pull the screwdriver out and let it drain.. I started changing my oil cool on that truck, i got tired of hot oil running up my arm. I guess i never really thought about taking pictures or anything, and its been over a year since ive done it.. wish i could help more!

It is easier that the 22re for sure. that was always a PITA on trucks with all of the emmissions etc.. Thats why i have that oil filter wrench deal i qouted earlier, but it doesnt really fit too well with the direction of the 2tr-fe filter and a normal ratchet, never tried a stubby.

deffinately. I vote, engine running, airbag technique and screwdriver combined. NOTHING can go wrong with this idea... as long as theres a camera rolling :)

Had trouble getting filter off on first oil change on my 4.0. Looking at the filter when I finally got it off, appears Toyota did not oil the filter gasket when engine was built. No problems on subsequent oil changes - I do them myself - oil the gasket and finger-tight plus 1/2 to 3/4 turn.

Why would they do a stupid thing like that? I finally got mine off, had to get one of them 3 finger pullers from Autozone and noticed I was able to work with it a little better after I lifted it a little higher off the ground. The zip lock bag thing worked great, wished I would thought of that a long time ago and saved a lot of messes.

First time I did mine on my 22RE I got it off fine. But could not put it back on. It was late and I did not have the angle right. Then I started taking the metal shield off the passenger side. 3 10mm for the shield and the filter was right there. It had a 4'' lift so there was plenty of room in the wheel well.
