When the oil is flowing through the oil filter, does it pass through the filter element from the inside out or outside in?

The reason for the question is that I'm considering installing the Baxter filter adapter and wanted to make sure that when I put on the spin on oil filter the oil will flow in the direction the filter was designed for.

Outside in. Pleats being on the outside.

Let me know how it goes with your Baxter adapter, I torqued the adapter to 40 pound feet, and spin on filter only 12 pound feet, and removing the spin on still turns the entire adapter.

If you're remotely relocating it, nothing to worry about

I plan to install it directly where the cartridge filter is and only hand tighten the spin on filter. I'll have to wait for the second oil change to see if unscrewing the spin on filter loosens the Baxter adapter.

Is changing the element that difficult to warrant a Baxter adapter?

I don't know. It's my first vehicle with a cartridge filter and I don't want to find out.

No, it's not. The extra steps are pulling the old filter out, putting the new one in and replacing the o-ring.

No, it's super easy. I have two Toyotas with the same style and maybe it takes 30 seconds more than a spin off.

Seems like a lot of extra steps just to create a use for old style spin on oil filters for the sake of "familiarity"

Do you know if the canister filter's bypass valve opens at the same pressure as the bypass valve built into the OEM filter cap? Could lead to oil starvation and engine damage if the canister filter's valve is set higher.

Here is a good video on the removal and reinstall of the filter element and housing.

My question was more of a rhetorical one.

I personally like the oil filter housing/element setup.

I run a fumoto valve in place of my drain bolt. When doing an oil change I just flip the valve open and stick the drain nipple into the filter housing and let everything drain while I do a tire rotation.
0 mess compared to the old spin on filters. Only thing I would recommend is get the aluminum filter housing to replace the plastic one.

Because you can does not mean you should.

I just don't understand this generation of folks that are in such a hurry in life. Honestly what are you going to do with the saved few minutes you might gain with a spin on filter?

On a side note, it is your truck and your science project. Good luck with that.

Pretty funny, considering spin ons weren't common until the 60's.

Guess what was before? Yep, cartridge.

Making cartridge the old style. Or maybe it's called retro now? :D

Pretty neat, did not know that.
I've always seen spin on filters on older (to me) vehicles and newer ones with cartridges elements.

I plan to keep this truck for a long time and do the oil changes every 5k miles, so I'm in favor of an easier and less messy procedure. Incidentally, I also plan to install a Fumoto valve. I have installed one on my other car several years ago and it's been great. No worries about overtightening the drain bolt.

How is it less messy? You literally drain all the oil out of the cartridge in a controlled manner before swapping out the filter element.

    But, ok?

I like the adapter but will not pay over $50 for one. I would get one so I would need only two different filters for the four Toyota/Lexus vehicles I maintain. Changing the filter is no big deal if you get the filter with the screw-in style drain nipple as oppose to the push-in, which are prone to leaking. If memory serves, the Wix XP, Fram Ultra, and Mobile1 have srew-in nipples. Once you come across one, you can re-use it until the threads start to wear down.

You do realize cartridge filters do a better job at filtering than a spin on right?
    Good luck.
