    Hey folks

I havent been on here in quite awhile but within the lapse time I traded in my 07 Tundra for a 2012 Tacoma TRD. Well nows the time for an oil change.

I will be using the OEM Toyota oil filters but what should I use for the oil? Now I bought the truck used and atleast from the last oil change it used the OEM filter. The last oil change was done at the Toyota Dealership in town so I am assuming they used the Toyota oil.

Should I use that oil? Use something else? In the past on older vehicles i had I always used Quaker State.

(I do know there always seems to be various opinions on this but I do welcome why you use your brand over another)

As a side question, while exploring my engine, I notice a tank which on the top said "coolant: (pink fluid) was half way. Should I fill and any suggestions on this as well would be great

    Thanks folks

I run Mobile 1 Conventional 5000. Can't go wrong with Mobile 1, and Toyota recommends conventional. I called my dumbass dealership and they said they just used "bulk oil" Lol

I've run Quaker State full syn 5w30 in my truck for the last 5yrs with no problems.

Toyota uses "pink" coolant, which everyone on here says to stick with (and I agree)
if you look on the side of the tank, it has a full cold & full hot line on it

My personal choice, and yours may differ, but I like the Mobil 1 5-30, and the Wix 53148 filters ($40 for case of 12 masterpack from Discount Fleet Supply)...buy oil based on API Specification and not on advertising. WalMart is cheapest on Mobil 1 around here.

I've always run Royal Purple in all my vehicles. No problem's so far. One question though, that chart has most vehicles needing an oil change t 5,000 miles with some at 10,000! that seems ridiculous to me. Any insight?

    +1 for Royal Purple

So far I've done 78K miles since October 2011 on Royal Purple 5w30 synthetic with not a single issue, The Impala has slightly over 80K miles (since 2009) on RP and everything else is falling apart but the engine itself is fine.

The OEM toyota filters are great, But I use either TRD or Royal Purple filters (I think they are made by the same manufacturer as is K&N).

The X-Runner gets it's oil changed every 6500-7K miles since it's synthetic... The Impala whenever the oil life meter thingy says so.

From my understanding with talking with some of the guys at Toyota, the 0w-20/30 oil is the wave of the future. As of now Toyota and one other Japanese car company is using it. It is much more expensive oil vs the standard oil. When I bought the oil change for it it was about $75 for it on my wife Camry.

Is the TRD filter suppose to work better than the standard?

    its made by K&N iirc

I figure, if it was better, then toyota would throw it on the truck already to cover THEM during the life of the warranty right?

that said, I run OEM with mobil 1
and I beat on this truck

Oil brand and type is like religion and politics, you will get lots of opinions and it can start arguments and fights. The most important thing is changing it regularly and using the correct viscosity, if you spend more and buy synthetic you can extend the oil change interval if so desired. I haven't heard of anyone blowing up their motor based on the brand of oil they used or by using conventional oils. I have used both synthetic and conventional oils in my truck, but always 5w-30. When I use synthetic I run it for 7,500 miles and when I use conventional I run it for 5,000 miles, I can't tell the difference in how the truck sounds or runs based on the oil. If you are running low on money, I would buy whatever major brand 5w-30 that AutoZone or Advance Auto (or your favorite local auto parts store) is running in their monthly ad when changing your oil. My dealership uses Pennzoil when they perform the service. If you want the absolute best oil out there, then Mobil 1 is the best readily available oil in my opinion and Amsoil is another but it isn't as easy to get, I like it in my motorcycles since they are air/oil cooled.

Another what oil should I use thread and I contributed. WTF?

Better quality, But it's almost 3x more expensive ($13-$15 per filter as opposed to $3-$5 per OEM filter)

BTW, You can get the pink anti freeze at the dealership for about $30... I have a jug of it in my garage just in case, There's a marked "fill mark" on the tank, Half full is I think right at the mark.

I had to drop off my daughter at school (yeah I know way to yearly to start) so I took it apon myself to check out the different pricings og oil among known places.

I stopped at O'Rielly , Pep Boys, Auto Zone, and yes Walmart. Well long story short Walmart is the cheapest place to by oil. Example the Mobil 1 there was between $25-27 vs the auto part stores close to $36 for the 5qt. And individual quarts were under $8 were as the auto parts stores at a consistent $10/ quart. The interesting part is the Royal purple has very little difference in price between walmart and the auto parts places. Walmart being arounf $37/5qt and the auto part places being $40.

Now for a heads up to anyone who reads this, O'Rielly has a special going on. 44.99 for a 5qt Royal Purple with a K&N oil filter. Meaning that $15 K&N is about $5. it is a limit 2 and this sale (at least within my region) ends on the 26 of Aug

As of now im debating between the Royal Purple and the Mobil 1

Question: Looking at the Mobil 1 at Walmart they also have the Mobil 1 extended performance (this is the $27 priced one) which states with will protect your vehicle up 15,000. Of course its disclaimer is, use it if your car doesnt have a warranty(Tacoma doesnt) and "extreme" conditions of high dust (which im in a pretty dusty place but not as bad further south) or a lot of towing (which I tow very rarely). SO my question now is anyone use the Mobil 1 Extended Performance and got it up to 15,000 before your next oil change? (if i do choose this oil I will be using the TRD oil filter or a K&N just to help it better)
