As soon as I see an ad that guarantees you will get a million miles from any engine if you use their more expensive oil, I’ll stop using the cheap Mobil 1 and buy it :D (sarcasm detected).

Is there a difference between Ad or scientific test?

It has been proven (in court trials) that If you pay enough, you can get a scientific test to validate what you want to sell.

Well, any oil that meets GF-6 is scientifically tested to be good in our type of engines.

They only state in the label that the product meets or exceeds certain certifications. They don’t make any false promises, but if they do, they state you must follow the manufacturer OCI. I would guess just in case they’re wrong so you can't sue them lol!

My 2019 Owners Manual specifies GF-5 oil. According to this site GF-6A is backwards compatible with GF-5, but GF-6B is not due to viscosity changes.

I would agree if back in the last century using conventional motor oil, but much has changed with the use of synthetics, and their additive packages now. Under normal driving conditions like most of us do, these synthetics will be good for 10k miles before any oil changes. Heck even mobil has tested some of their synthetic motor oils to go twice past that with no visible wear in over 200k miles.

If the point of this discussion is to state that a better refined oil will make the engine last longer, that is a mute discussion because there’s data for engines with a million miles with conventional oils from the last century that accomplished the same task, and are much cheaper.

But there’s much more to the discussion other than engine longevity, such as oil life itself, to which we have data that support that better oils can last longer.

However, there’s still at least another vital point to look into, which is, engine lubrication requirements.

These modern engines are not your grandfather’s Oldsmobile. Overhead cams, HPFP, and many other components all require oils that can flow faster and retain their viscosity within very close tolerances.

To bring all this together requires some of the most brilliant engineers and scientist who really know their chit, and thus we have oil and engine specifications all clearly spelled out.

And if we want to go beyond those specification, we’re need data, lots of data to support any new findings.

As to the OP in hopes of learning something, It is a never ending adventure, a beautiful lifelong endeavor for some.

there’s a lot of “new-to-car-forums” people in Tacomaworld and 3rd gen in particular.

Don’t worry, it will all be taken to the 4th gen forum in a couple years. :D

It's probably posted here because the 3rd Gen engine is a whole different animal than previous generation Tacoma with different lubrication requirements

If you are talking about pricey Amsoil Signature GF-6A likely so. For others I’m not so sure. Although Project Farm testing isn’t so scientific, it’s decent and Pennzoil Ultra Platinum, a GL-5, came in second behind Amsoil Signature. My dealer uses bulk Platinum from the Southeast Toyota Dealers (from what a i’ve read most dealers don’t use Toyota motor oil which is unfortunate since it has outstanding Viscosity Index specs). The Pennzoil is affordable and it’s what I use. Mobile 1, GL-6(A compatible) came in behind the Pennzoil.

Really changing your oil timely is more important, the synthetics are all good oils.

There's a difference in the packaging.

Anything with a given GL or API cert will do what it is spec'd to do within the manufacturer's maintenance window. Doesn't matter what it's made from.

He may have a magnum with a itchy trigger finger lol!

Either he doesn’t believe in all the scientific testing, or may know more than the scientist or engineers. But which ever it maybe, if it weren’t for courageous people like him, willing to put it all on the line for testing his beliefs, where would humanity be?
