Oil leak after self service

    Alright TW peeps, before the bashing starts I did some searching and couldn't find the answer I am looking for. So let's begin.

    I did my first oil change last weekend at 20k. Up to this point the dealer has done them. Everything went as planned. I installed a Toyota filter and O-ring kit (04152-YZZA1) and a little over 6 quarts of 0W-20 full synthetic.

    Now to the leaking issue, I noticed some drops forming on the edge of the filter cap throughout the week. I removed my skid plate door and found a small pool was forming on the skid.

    Today I drained and removed the filter cap, cleaned the threads and inspected the O-ring. I found no visible issues so I reinstalled the filter cap and added that quart back into the engine. After running the engine for around 5 minutes I noticed another drop forming on the filter housing.

    I am lost at what the issue could be. Anyone have any ideas? It seems like the leak is coming from the lip of the cap that meets the engine housing.

    Did the sealing ring stay on with the old filter. ?
    Spin on a new filter. Make sure it's completely clean and try putting a little bit of clean oil on the new filter oring

    The O-ring is in the groove that I removed the old one from. The groove directly below the threads as pictured.

    It's not a canister style filter like the 2nd gen. It's the dumbass reusable housing style that Toyota decided to use instead.

    Wow that sucks. Shows how much I pay attention to the 3rd gens. That being said I'm to lazy to do my own oil changes.

    Did you over torq the filter housing and accidentally crack it? I would get a new filter and o-rings see if that solves the issue.

    It’s just cheap plastic and easy to do. Might be a good time to just get the metal one that Toyota was too cheap to put on them in the first place. They’re not expensive.

    I just use my truck as an excuse to get away from my other responsibilities lol.

    I used the listed torque values from the maintenance thread and when I removed it today I didn't see any cracks. It also didn't leak any when I had it off of the truck

    It has been on my list for a while, just never took the plunge. I don't think the housing is my issue

    It has to be how the O-ring is seated then if it's not cracked, and not leaking. If you over turn it sometimes the oring gets bunched up and that'll cause a leak too

    So would the 18ft•lbs be too much or not enough? I rubbed some oil onto the o-rings prior to install as well

    I thought it was 10 for the housing, and 18 was for the plug

    Put lithium grease on the O ring and use the goodentight method imho. Just don't go too retarded and crack the housing.

    That sounds correct for the housing. Check the housing is still true (not warped), and the oring is seated correctly with no debris. Then try 19. You may want to replace it with the aluminum ones. One drop an hour is not a show stopper.

    Always put a thin coat of oil on o ring before re-installing.

    Same design as the 5th gen 4Runners (since 2010) except the filter part number for the 4R ends in 5 not 1 and is about 3/4” taller than the Tacoma filter.
