Well golly, something must be different.

You rarely if ever see whining about the 5th gen 4R or the Tundra filter set ups.

But not two days goes by without someone squawking about what a colossal pain in the ass this setup is on the third gen Tacoma.

Which is mind boggling, since the current 4R has two skid plates to remove to get to the filter and a cover for the drain plug.

That's my next move. The one drop isn't a big deal, just the upcoming trip for the holiday ~800 miles has me worried about it. Don't want to end up stranded somewhere due to this nonsense.

From personal experience, I make sure that I wipe all the oil from the metal filter housing and the mating surface on the truck. Then I make sure that the rubber o ring is not twisted but you can see the horizontal seam around the correct groove of the filter housing. When I tighten, I use a breaker bar to tighten but stop after i feel good resistance and then give it a good tug to make sure its not loose. The last thing i do is spray brake clean to remove any oil residue. I dont do this to my tacoma because I drive a 4 banger but have done this thousands of times.

Just an update: I ended up replacing the stock filter housing with the aluminum one a few days after Christmas. After draining the housing another time to inspect it and putting it back on I decided to start the truck and watch it for a few minutes to find the leak. I found that the plastic housing had a hairline crack in the side of it that would only leak under the pressure of the engine running. It would have been impossible to detect by simply looking at it. Since the aluminum housing install, roughly 4 months and 3k miles ago I have had no leaks or issues with the aluminum housing
