So I recently bought a 2017 Tacoma with the 2.7. I noticed oil on top of the valve cover through other research I've found that it's the "camshaft timing actuator". I don't see a crack but that doesn't mean there isn't one there. Is there a common leak in this area? I've researched and I can't find much. Any help would be awesome. Also, while in drive with the foot on the brake the truck idles like it has a slight misfire. Idle is just above 500 rpm. No check engine light, no stored codes. Wondering if the two are related. Pic of the oil leak area attached, thanks

There is an O-ring that no longer seals the valve. Get one and replace. Easy task.

Truck has 124,000 miles. Oil changed pretty regularly from the carfax report. Bought it from a dealer so unknown as to what the previous owner did

Is this a common failure? It's hard to tell off it's coming from there or not. Could the fan be blowing it back? Because it doesn't look wet underneath the actuator

Valve cover gasket? Clean it and monitor.
Idle is normal. If suspect misfires, get obd2 tool to confirm.

    Yeah.
Vlady knows his stuff, and replacing that o-ring looks like a super simple job. One bolt, pull the actuator out, replace o-ring. It certainly shouldn't hurt anything. Looks like this:

I cleaned it and took it for a ride and there was fresh oil in that ridge right where my finger is pointed to.

If you bought it from a dealer, why not take it back where you got it and have them address this.
Maybe get someone to check the truck over since it has so many miles?

    Yeah.
Did some digging, this one isn't easy to find. You may want to search for this part number, or just order from partsouq.com.

Have any local hydraulic hose builders that sell O rings? Take the old one and have them match it up. Done that many times over the years locally with O rings. Even many decent hardware stores carry them, just make sure you get one that is viton or OK to be used for oil.

A decent shop will have a O ring measuring sizer that will measure both the inside and outside diameter.

Is there any benefit to changing the whole part? Or is it one of those "change it when it fails" kinda deals

The oring is cheap, the oil control valve is expensive-er

If there's oil on the aluminum cylinder head above the exhaust then the valve cover gasket is probably leaking too. Very common on lots of vehicles. Do spark plugs at the same time if you replce the v/c gasket

Solenoids rarely fail, unless the maintenance is neglected.
Check the valve cover for possible leaks before buying a solenoid

It looks as though a valve cover bolt is missing from the corner of the cover. Part# 91553-80628 in Vlady's drawing.

Good eye! I know I would never have spotted that.

    The bolt in question:

Sure looks like there's a bolt missing.

The "missing" bolt is concealed by the wiring harness...

    (not my truck)
