19553107-A5FD-49CB-A7E0-677F3E8F943E.jpg I changed the oil for the first time on my 3 Gen taco 4x4, I broke the plastic oil filter housing when removing it. I ordered the aluminum OEM and it’s in the mail, I bought another aluminum oil housing from Oreillys to hold me off till it gets here. There is a very small leak, like one drop randomly coming from the Oreilly oil housing. I’ve driven my truck for like 10 miles and still the same. Then I noticed oil in my exhaust (see pic). Should I be worried about the oil in the exhaust and take it in to the dealership? As soon as the OEM oil housing gets here I am swapping it out

Did you look up higher? Rear main seal leak maybe? Anything leaking out of bell housing or along the rear of the block?

edit: it could also be the oil that was leaking as you drive getting flung back on the exhaust or running along top edge of the oil pan back and down?

hey man thanks for the reply. Yeah I did look up higher and didn’t see any oil leaking anywhere, gonna check again just in case.

yeah that’s what I was thinking too, that it may just be the oil that is leaking and hitting the exhaust as I drive… I’m gonna clean that part of the exhaust and then drive around the neighborhood and check it again to see if it’s still doing it

Yeah once you get that new housing on and sure nothing is leaking clean up under there with some brake cleaner or degreaser to try to get all the oil cleaned up and check again after a bit. You’d be surprised how what leaked out could still run down and look fresh for a while.

Sure it's not just condensation mixing with exhaust soot and running down? Does it look the same as the bottom side of the exhaust tip, if so, that's probably what it is?

thanks man, I cleaned up the oil a bit and revved up the engine and checked again and it wasn’t leaking anymore and didn’t notice any oil on the exhaust, then drove around the neighborhood and checked again and there was no oil on the exhaust either… I think it was splatter from that small leak when I was driving on the highway , it just seemed weird that it was mainly on the exhaust … but yeah once the new housing gets here gonna clean up the oil again and test it out on the highway and check again

I do see the condensation drip as usual… I actually hadn’t thought about checking the exhaust tip so thanks for mentioning it, gonna check now

When I read threads like this I scratch my head. That is not oil " in your exaust " it's oil on your exaust. When you change your oil you should have a can of brake/parts cleaner and blast away when done. Put the new housing on, clean it, Drive it.

yeah you’re right, I freaked out cause it almost looked like oil was accumulating from the inside of the exhaust and it was my first oil change on my 3rd Gen, but yeah I’m cleaning it with brake cleaner and installing the new housing and checking it again
