Not sure what everyone’s theory is on this.. I know the manual says 6.2 quarts with filter. So I’ve noticed on my “Toyota Owners” page that in the past dealers have put 7 quarts of oil in the truck in the past.

I recently changed my oil and filter.. did a few other things around the truck while my oil was draining. My dumbass put 7quarts in. Now I do know that’s overfilled. But I noticed one side of the dipstick reads dead nuts and the other side reads sky high. Anyone else on here been in the same situation? These new dipsticks suck to read. I’m assuming the high side reading is just because of the oil in the dipstick tube?

let it sit overnight and in the AM don't start it just pull the dip stick out, should get a good read.

Did they actually use 7qts. Or was it billed as 7 qts.
I typically get billed for 6 quarts on my 2nd Gen. It actually holds 5.5 qts.
They don’t sell half quarts. (But it’s pumped from a hose? Beats me)

I’d just run it, it’s not like you put 10 quarts in it.

I think it’s about 6.1 qts but I never drain the oil all the way and just put in 6 qts. I recently had a tire shop do my oil change because I didn’t want to get on the ground that day and they put in 5.5 qts.

Honestly don’t worry about it I drained my trans pan and double filled the oil on my 2010 and drove 15 miles wondering why my trans was slipping so hard.. (Don’t bash me too hard I was raised by a single mom and was 19). FWIW I had that truck for another 170k and sold with 250k on it. don’t worry check oil level in the AM as suggested and if you feel like you’d be more comfortable drain all the oil into a clean drain pan and add in most of it eyeball 5.5 quarts. Check dip stick and add accordingly. I think you’d be alright with a quart over but it’s your truck.

You’re SURE you didn’t drain the transmission?

Thanks everyone! I’ll check it again in the morning but it sounds like from you guys opinion I’ll be good just to run the damn thing. I’ve just heard bad story’s about oil “foaming” but I highly doubt roughly a quart over will do that. Anyone else hate the dipsticks on the Tacoma’s? Or is it just me? My wife’s civic is so much easier to read.

I have never liked the dipstick in
The Tacoma’s but not nearly as bad as my F350s twizzler of a dipstick

If you decide to go this route keep in mind it will get quite messy. Only reason I suggested to drain it all and add back. Again from experience from my own mistakes which I make more often then I’d like to admit. And I’m sure there’s a way to use quoted posts method without making a mess. I just clearly can’t think of it.

proper way to check the oil level especially with 0w-20 newly filled or even lighter weight oil:
run the engine for more than 15 mins (user manual says 5 mins, but V6 takes way longer than 5 mins to reach max working temp)
    shut of the engine
    immediately pull the dipstick out
wait 10 mins, close the hood if you don't want dirt fall into the dipstick tube
insert fully and pull out and get a reading

what you are reading is most likely a very think transparent film of oil and you'll see a line but don't expect anything caramel color at all with new light weight oil
you only get 1 shot at reading this because as soon as you insert it back and pull out again the residual oil in the tube will mess up the reading

Honestly, I'm not losing sleep over 0.8 quarts.

Use the filter drain hole and don’t screw all way out.

I thought about that but would it not create a drain pattern too wide for your average oil drain pan?

The reason you've seen 7qts on your bill is likely because a dealer is going to charge for full quarts. Most shops dont charge partial quarts when it comes to engine oil. So. 6.2 gets charged to the customer as 7.

It doesnt really pour out until you insert that little drain tool in, I like to stick it in the top of an empty water bottle to drain the filter.

Okay I thought you meant draining via the oil drain pan. Not the filter.

Yeah my dealer also charges 7qts but adjusts the price per qt to match price for 6.2 qts. I figured this out because there was a discount on oil they used, and I asked why I got a discount. They explained to me that their system doesn’t allow fractions for number or parts used, so they round it to the next number and apply a discount to match the price to the actual amount used.

It "probably" won't be an issue, but I wouldn't risk $10k engine damage over "probably"..... especially when it's an easy fix. You might not have an issue until you are on an incline.... whip a little oil and suck it into a bearing.

Just fix it right. Drain about .8 quarts. Figure out how to get a good read on your dipstick.
