That's very very unlucky! I beat mine hard for 19 years and 590k miles, then drove it to the wreakers.

I almost always change the oil in my taco and my wife’s Corolla at the same time. Mine holds 6.2 and hers 4.4

I buy 11 quarts and put 4.5 in hers and 6.5 in mine, problem solved.

Glad I found this. I was about to go out to buy a "spare" quart. It's silly for Toyota to come up with these uneven capacities.

In America it's uneven amounts because we use quarts on the rest planet it's litres

I did not read this whole thread but:
    1. Start/Warm engine
    2. Turn off engine
    3. Remove dipstick
    4. Wait 15ish minutes

The oil gets stuck on the walls of the dipstick tube. Letting the oil settle down into the oil pan usually helps with readings. Overfilling CAN be bad as it may cause the oil to foam.

I wouldn't want mine over filled by a quart and I don't have any trouble reading the dip stick .

Adding on to this, I changed the oil and filter for the first time about a month ago and after adding ~6.5qts (incl. ~0.25qt into the filter itself before installing it), I wasn't seeing anything indicating on the dipstick.

Drove a little, let it sit, still nothing indicated. Didn't want to risk overfilling, and there were no low oil/low oil pressure warning lights, so I just drove it that way for a few weeks.

But it had been weighing on my mind, so last weekend, I decided to check again (nothing), then added another 1/2qt. AH! Now, I can see oil barely registering at the tip of the dipstick. In total, I must have added ~7.25qts before any oil was visible on the dipstick.

    Yes, flat surface.
    Yes, let the engine run.
Yes, let it sit overnight and checked in the morning.

 Don't know what to say, unless the measuring marks embossed on the side of the oil container are wrong. (2x 5qt containers of Mobil1)

Stock wheels and suspension. Random "utilitarian" mods featured on this great forum.
Something is very wrong here. The dipstick is not hitting down enough or bunching up or something else. When I changed mine a few weeks ago, 6 qts brings me to right below the top mark. As others, didn't bother pouring the additional 0.2 qts. Go back and see where things went wrong because 7.25 qts is way way too much.

Im betting you didnt push the dipstick down fully seating into the tube. I did this on my first oil change on the taco as well. It feels like its seated but it actually can go down into the the tube a little more and then you will see your oil line.

I got 6 individual bottles of Toyota synthetic, but I'm thinking of switching to Mobil 1 next time--I'm a little sketched out by buying oil on Amazon, since there's so much counterfeited goods, and that's the only way to get it at a reasonable price--but it's still expensive relative to Mobil 1. I figure I'll buy a 5 quart and 1 quart bottle, to eliminate the errors involved.

But that begs the question--are these bottles filled precisely? Wonder what kind of quality control they have on how much is in there? I know: pour it in and check the dip stick.

They measure fill by flow meter and then QC check by weight. It should be very precise. Buy M1 at Wal-Mart. It will be cheaper than anywhere online.

Edit: M1 0/20 extended performance 5qt $24.37 on Amazon. I just bought two of these today at Walmart for $24.88, so it's actually not cheaper but I'll take it right now for the +$0.50 each.

I overfilled my truck a bit at its first oil change but luckily have a vacuum pump to drain a little out from the top.

This is how I do it except after pulling/cleaning the dip stick, i stick the tip back in and let it flop until 5 mins to settle
