    I've got a 2016 Tacoma v6.
i changed my own oil yesterday. Followed all the instructions I've read on here. Changed the filter element in the cartridge. Got everything back together. Put in 6 quarts. I ran the motor checked the dip stick and I think it's saying it's above the full mark. How is that possible? The manual says it holds 6.2 quarts... also it's damn near impossible to see the oil level on the dipstick... seems like oil gets all over it, and it's hard to see the line. Anyway, should I take some out?

Better low of full than over full, 6qts is correct but sometimes the jugs and/or the oil pans differ. Best to go by the dipstick rather than the jugs.

I'd fix it. After checking it in the morning when cold.

You've definitely got to drain the excess.

And for the future, never just dump in that much oil in one go. Add most of it, check level, then top off until you're exactly where you want to be.

Great... this is going to be a mess...

So just take the drain bolt out briefly and let some come out? Think I need to put a new blue seal on the drain plug just from letting oil out? Or is the one I put on yesterday still good?

Thank you guys for your comments.

Check it several more times before draining some out.

Take some 80-60 grit emery paper and rough up the dipstick where it goes into the oil. Make sure you clean off any grit well. Makes it MUCH easier to read.

Another way to read the dipstick is pull it out for 10 minutes so the oil drains out of the bend of the tube where the dipstick touches the side of the tube. You only get one read on the oil level when you insert and pull the stick out. If you need to check it again pull it out for another 10 minutes.

Have to realize all quartz of oil is never filled accurately. Some might be slightly over or under. That's why you always put the last quart of oil a quarter at a time. At my work we use quart bottles and oil from The tank and always they are never correct.

I usually hold on the last quart when I fill and check levels---if its between low and high, i'll start the engine and let it idle for 15 minutes let it cool and recheck in 30 mins and top off if needed

OP, you should be fine, just slowly let out the oil pan bolt...let out about half a quart and recheck in 30 minutes. No need to replace gasket

It would probably be fine, but if it was my car---i'd get under there and drain a little. Better to be low than high, the pressure could get too high and cause any number of issues

This. New oil is sometimes hard to read.

Also, did you crank the truck and circulate the oil after changing it? You need to fill the filter back up to get the right reading. Don't forget to let the oil drain back into the pan after doing this.

Excessive oil level will allow the crank shaft to come in contact with the oil. When this happens, the crankshaft will whip the oil much like whipping cream. That oil cannot provide a good oil wedge to the bearings. A little high is ok. Excessive is not.

If u drained on a fairly level surface, changed filter element, and gave it a few minutes to fully drain the system woulf be considered evacuated/empty. If you then only put in 6 qts you are not overfull end of story.

I'll re-check it when I get home from work. I did start it for a minute after I changed the oil and let it circulate. I checked it and it looked over the full line, but I thought this was just oil the dipstick was hitting on the way down/up. I drove it to the store after which is about half mile away without incident.

Think I'll probably let a little out when I get home.

This was my first oil change. Ever. So I don't really know all the tricks... I've done some minor work to boats (gear lube, water pump, oil pump, spark plugs), but that's about the extent of my motor experience, and I don't work in the mechanical field. The next one should go a lot more quickly and I won't over fill. Also, won't use the bullshit Walmart oil drain pan that allowed oil to splatter EVERYWHERE! Lol! It was a mess!

I'm a big fan of this drain pain, been using for my taco for a bit now. Solid and great capacity.

First oil change on the taco, used a shallow pan, same thing happened to me, oil everywhere.

Depends on how overfilled the sump is. It could be quite bad..... but it would likely need multiple quarts high.

Check and only adjust if needed. Make sure you are looking at the dipstick right. New oil can be tricky to see.
