My ‘15 4.0 shows about 3/16 inch above the full line after an oil change.
I know what the manual says. Looking for advice from the real world.
    Thanks

I don't think the Toyota dipsticks are very reliable. The owner's manual for my 2012 2.7 l says 6 quarts of oil. I put in 6 quarts and it's like a half an inch over the high mark. It used to bother me so much that I actually made my own high and low marks on the dipstick. Now I just don't worry about it!

As long as you put in 5.5 quarts don’t worry about it

How level is the truck when you checked?
When you change the oil, put a level on the lower bumper grill. Making sure it is level is ideal, checking or changing. Give it time to drain down to intermittent, small weeping drops.
Check your manual, if you have a 4.0L 5.5qt of oil is the ticket, or 6.0qt for 2.7L.
If it was level, you're maybe .5qt too full? I would hazard a guess it is okay. Easy work-around, just change the filter, which is good for .5qt when full. Or use a long turkey-baster to suck it out :p

Assuming a filter change as well (standard size filter), you can just buy a 5qt jug and you should end up right about halfway on the dipstick when it's all done. That extra .5 quart never made a lot of sense to me and I actually found it kind of annoying because it's cheaper to buy 5qt jugs than single 1qt bottles. (yes you could always tap into another 5qt jug for that remaining .5 but what a waste)

But wouldn't the real expense be running an engine low on oil?
Maybe I am a dummy here, but low oil = no bueno
.5qt is 10% of the full amount.

Whatever the manual says is for a dry engine, you’ll always have residual left on just a drain.

This is wrong see below post #10.

No. If it’s between the high and low fill lines on the dipstick, you’re 1000% good to go.

Not true. The owner's manual only specifies capacities for w/filter and w/o filter. Factory service manuals specify those plus dry fill capacities.

    For 1GR-FE (4.0 V6):

The dipstick has a high, and low mark on it. Anywhere in between those marks is fine. If I check oil and it is anywhere between them I don't worry about it. If the oil level falls below the low mark that means add 1 full quart to get up to full. No reason to add partial quarts.

You asked for real world advice.
In -my world- 3/16” over full would not be an issue.
Close the hood and correct the level next time the oil is changed.

The area between the high/low marks is called the "safe zone" for a reason

 Respect to you for owning it and not being like some guys knowingly wrong who'll just argue till their blue in the face instead of just taking a bite out of some humble pie and admitting they made a mistake, or even worse, admitting they were w-w-w-w-wrong.

Engines always "consume" a small amount of oil, having a little over the top won't hurt anything.

True, but my engine must be bulimic then since every time I check its oil level it hasn't moved a hair. :puke:

P.S. Don't worry about calling HR, I'll just escort myself to TW Sensitivity Training.

Maybe you just have an engine with tight compression and good valve guide seals, I wouldn't complain. No need to get HR involved, we don't get along very well either

    This is true.
    Reminds me of a story.

There was a time when I worked at AutoZone. (Right out of High school)
Lady comes in and buys a case of oil. I help her out to here car with it.
She opens the hood had pours 3 quarts in. The follow conversation en-sues

Me - You think we should check the level?
Her - No, I know how much it uses.
Me - Are you sure that’s not too much?
Her - No, I know how much it uses.
    Me - Are you sure?
Here - (Frustrated by persistent questioning) - Honey, I don’t think you understand. The car USES OIL.
I know when it’s low, it starts making a noise. Been doing this few a few years now. I don’t need to check the oil.

And that’s when I found out there were 2 definitions of “uses oil”.
I will say, she seemed to know what she was doing.

Well sure, there is no quantification on the general term of "uses" oil. But safe to say all engines use some amount of engine oil, how much that use is, is up to the user to trend and quantify LOL
