    You're right, $650 is insane.

A mobile mechanic could leave the pan on and knock this out in no time. On my transmission pan when this happened I tapped the hole with the original size thread and got lucky. Turned out it was mostly the male threads that were damaged, and the female only needed some touching up.

This price is the I don’t want to fix it and go away. You should find another mechanic. JMHO

Honesty is everything, so I appreciate the opinion - and frankly, I'm at the same conclusion. He lost me when he not only wouldn't take responsibility for it, but when I told him my mechanic friends disagreed, he just said "they're wrong." I mean, everyone else can't be wrong.

Ugh! I mistyped sorry - I do actually know that. I meant 4wd - but looking again, the description on that one reads 2wd, so I'll reach out to PartsGeek.

FWIW I bought SKU 103-066 and it didn't fit - then chatted with a PG person, who searched by my VIN and recommended SKU TOP22A - and it also didn't fit. I then called PG and gave my VIN and that person said they don't have anything that will fit. Then I called Toyota and they said they also don't have anything that will fit.

    Then I had some Scotch.

Might work because you'd never have to remove it. Though drain and fill shops don't like them because they drain a bit slower. Or they don't know what it is and remove it anyway.

I just got off phone with my oil field welder friend
He 1st said the proper way to weld a a new bung would have to be done with pan off
    Outer/clean then weld the inner
That fumoto valve is brass as well(cannot weld brass to steel (only solder))
The biggest reason for this is thinness of the pan and the weld needs to hold a petroleum product

he said a chance that outer only weld could hold for a while if done/metal prepped correctly. This could be difficult bc no matter what….some residual oil will seep out and contaminate welding surface
Also stated that the bung has to be shallow….cannot extend too far up in the oil pan bc will not drain fully

as we talked, a die thread cutter was brought up……but typically the sets we have seen are pretty small……then changed my search pattern…..
    Success!

    More better quality out there
Comes with taps and matching new drain plug bolt
just need to make sure of size!!

This won’t help you since you can’t weld, but I have welded a nut to the outside of pans rather than pulling the pan and cut out and weld in a new bung. Done it multiple times when family has come with stripped out bungs and no way I am pulling a pan to do it. Its no different than welding in an oil return port for a turbo swap.

But for your current scenario, I would epoxy a fumoto in and start looking for a pan. I just threw away a perfectly good 2wd pan and pickup cause I was doing a 3.0-3.4 swap and needed a t100 pan and pickup. There are large 3.4 swap groups on facebook and a few probably have a stack of old pans sitting around. You could join some and ask.
