    I have about 6k on my 2016 and still haven't done my first oil change. I don't have my oil change for another 4,000 miles. Was wondering what you all did. I'm sure this has been done but why not again.

    If you plan on keeping the truck for a long time I'd change it. If you are going to trade it in in a few years screw it. I changed mine at 1200 miles when it was new because I want to make this truck last as long as possible. There was a lot of metal in the oil which is normal. However I don't think I'd want it in there for 10k miles. And now I do it every 5k-7k miles.

    I did both. Had to order a special wrench to make taking off the filter easier.

    I am planning on holding onto the truck until the frame rots!

    However, I can't see why the Toyota tech's would recommend at 10k if it would jeopardize the longevity of the truck...

    Just wanted to see what the TW population did

    I look at it this way. Sure it's probably ok but I don't doubt cost factored into toyotas decision to do 10k mile oil changes. It's cheaper under their provided maintenance plan to do it every 10k miles than 5k miles for them.

    Just had my 5K service done. Also had tsb for trans programming and the control arm plugs, and insisted on an oil change. No way will it hurt, and it's not like it's much money.

    I change oil ( Mobil 1) every 10K .... and change filters every 5K .... so I use 2 oil filters every oil change cycle.

    You have to look at it from a different angle, Toyota and/or the mechanic don't have anything invested in your truck, you do. If you change your oil at 10,000 or 15,000 miles, it won't destroy your motor. Could it cause premature wear or allow sludge build-up? You bet it could. But the truck will still keep running, might be a little noisier, might use a little oil, maybe puff some smoke on start-up. But it will keep running well past the standard warranty with no problem and unless you completely abuse it will still be running well past the "premium" warranty. If it causes a problem during the warranty, it costs them. If it causes a problem past the warranty period it costs you. They know it isn't going to a problem in the warranty period.

    1. Toyota doesn't care about your ownership experience, or more correctly they care more about scoring better on the corporate mileage goal and appeasing all the enviro-wackos that think extended oil change intervals will "save the planet"
    2. The technician doesn't care to get into an "oil thread discussion" with every person that comes in for a service, he doesn't make any money jacking his jaw. His best defense is to just regurgitate the corporate policy and get back to spinning wrenches.
    3. Car salesmen, mechanics and politicians share one common trait: They don't let the truth get in the way of their agenda

    I changed mine at 300, 1k, 5k, and will let the dealer do it at 10k. I'm planning on keeping the truck so that's what I felt like doing. I'll change it every 5k from here on out.

    Bought oem filters from Cool Springs Toyota's online parts website (they happen to be local to me so I can just do local pickup which is nice and the cheapest I can find on oem parts and acessories).

    I ordered TRD filters for my 4Runner when I had it, but can't figure out what the part number is for TRD filters on the 16+ Tacomas, if anyone knows please share.

    I had oil tested after 10,000 miles on my 2011 Tacoma with the 2.7 and the told me it would go another 4000 miles and still be safe on the motor. And that's with Mobil 1 0w20 and a Mobil 1 filter. So I just change every 10,000 and that's done every other month because of all the driving I do. I also do it my self after the 20,000 miles. The dealer changed my oil every 5,000 under the free 24,000 service deal. Only because I caught them not doing there job checking all the fluid levels... And not rechecking torque on my bolts on my suspension like they are required to do that 98% of them don't do.

    I'm dumping the oil at around the 800 mile mark. I like to get the foreign material out of the oil sooner, rather than later.
    Been doing it this way since my very 1st vehicle.

    I did an initial change at 1,600 mi. I'd intended to do it closer to 1,000 but life got in the way. Not going to make a difference. Even the early change probably won't make any discernible difference but it was a good excuse to crawl around under the truck and familiarize myself with it.

    Oil & filter were both Toyota OEM. I was already picking up something from the parts counter and saved myself a trip elsewhere. If I remember correctly I paid something like $5.50 for the filter and $6.50 per quart. Back of the bottle claims it's marketed by Toyota for ExxonMobil so I imagine the base stock is Mobil1 or closely related.

    When the 10k service is done I may have the tech grab a sample for analysis or I may see if I can pull a sample before taking it in if I can do so without making a big mess. I'll be curious to see what Blackstone says. On my funcar with its 15k intervals the test I did made it clear that interval was fine.

    Engine break-in is 1000 miles according to the owner's manual. If you plan to keep the truck for a long time, it would be a good idea to change it once at 1000 miles, then follow the book interval (every 10k for light duty, 5k for severe).
