    Flip the truck?
WHY DIDN'T I THINK OF THAT????

I don't think they are hiring the Flash, though. Seems like they were suggesting that they were doing this job themselves.

maybe if you slide a piece of paper in between the motor and the filter just before removing it... kind of like that old science trick with the water in the glass.

Why are you guys changing it so early and often? Is there an actual reason or just to make yourself feel good? Have you sent in a sample? Going 10k on full synthetic isn't an issue, some cars go 15k between changes. If anyone had evidence through oil analysis it would make sense, but does anyone? Anyone at all?

On my funcar I did an analysis with ~8000mi on the oil. Blackstone gave every indication that the factory OCI of 15,000 miles was fine. Moot though since I always hit the 12 month interval first.

I intend to do an analysis on my Tacoma's oil once I have enough miles to make it meaningful, assuming I can manage to pull a sample without doing a full change. That'll be another three or four months though. My expectation is that an analysis at 5,000 miles will indicate that the 10,000 interval is fine. We shall see.

This is all I use. Pennzoil Ultra Platinum. Walmart usually stocks it but if they don't just do free store pickup.

I don't change it so often but early yes, it's to clear out "break-in" oil and get the metal out as much as possible. I had it changed at a little over 2K miles, other than that I'll probably go the 10K.

Personal preference as Mobil 1 UOAs show no real benefit to the Toyota oil. Here's one at 60k miles where the others were the Toyota Synthetic. PUP, used on my other vehicles, showed significant reductions in oil consumption as well as cam/valve noise and UOA's have always shown good shear stability.

I did mine at about 5k because I feel as others, that if you are going to keep it, then an initial one before 5k is a good idea. I know that everything is full synthetic but man I have a hard time letting my oil go for 10k...

Ya got a Cliff Notes version that isn't a half hour long?

I'm not particular on oil brand beyond going with name brand. Of the myriad family vehicles over the past three decades I've had a couple Chrysler main seal failures a bit past 100k, a GM throw a rod at 85k, and everything else ran fine until wrecked or sold/traded including a 170k mile 4Runner and 200k+ Camry.

    Thanks.

As for Mobil1 vs Toyota branded oil similarities that's not real surprising... :D

Yet the same manual says the break in period for the engine is 1000 miles. No need to be a dick dude. I don't place any faith in "probably" do what u want with your truck ill do what I want with mine. The guy asked what guys were doing and I answered. There's a big difference between 250 miles and 10,000 miles.

I knew it was a cartridge, but not where it was--which doesn't change anything, with the engine stopped the only oil you'll lose is what's in the cartridge and housing--top it off when done. My '98 Mercedes SL500 has pretty much the same thing (though you can get at it from the top).

After seeing where it is located, especially as compared to that of the 4.0, I find it yet another reason to not get a 3rd gen Taco...

Don't waste your time and money. Do it when the manual recommends it. The people who designed the motor know more/better than you do.

Thanks, but I don't think I'll be taking your advice on something you haven't done on a motor you're not that familiar with. Appreciate the thought though.

It's just swapping out an oil filter, same as one would do when changing the oil & filter--but leave out the oil changing part. I've been doing it for 60 years and assure you there is not one bit of rocket science involved...

I changed mine at 5k the first time, and plan to do 5k intervals in the future. Why? Because I have done it on all my vehicles. Easy to remember, hit 5k and change it. Plus on this truck, I probably qualify for the severe duty interval.

Besides ,the cost is minor. I can pick up the oil for 5.04/quart from the dealer. Filter isn't too bad either. I think all told I can change the oil for 42 or 43 dollars?
