I would do that as well , if i was out off all options. Even in its state the dealership would take it off your hands and you could trade it in

Oof, I feel for him, and I hope he gets the support and problem solving he needs and deserves. I’m kind of in the same boat, life is kinda handing me lemons right now. It’ll all work out and I know it’s all temporary and material, but it’s overwhelming. again, I appreciate you trying to help, and I wish your coworker well! Sounds like he, at the least, has a good friend!

You’ve got a good attitude about this mess, so I’m sure you’ll be fine.
Hopefully your truck will be rolling again soon!

Unfortunately if an oil pump fails and you don’t catch it very quickly (<1-5 minutes) the engine is toast. The rebuilt motors are usually rough because of leaks (especially timing cover), poor workmanship, damaged cores that aren’t correctly repaired. Just look on forums or Reddit for people’s experience with rebuilt Jasper motors and similar companies.

It’s better to just buy a low mile used motor that has been unopened. Bonus points if you know the old trucks maintenance history. These engines are also cheaper than rebuilt motors 9/10 times.

Thank you! This is helpful and informative. The hardest part of this process is really trying to “catch up” on the know. I appreciate your explanation!

Had an 04 Civic that blew a head gasket at 140K in 2012. Sucked, I did all factory recommended maintenance at the correct intervals, didn’t rag it like a typical Civic dude and it still shit the bed. Honda’s are supposed to be invincible.

I’d check your local lemon laws.

Lemon law is for new vehicles under 12 or 18 months only.
Going through a buy back on a 2024 bmw now

    Sorry to hear about this.

I’ve been working on cars since I was 14. Built my first motor at 16. Often times, everything can be done perfectly and part still fails. Parts are parts in manufacturing defect in an oil pump may be the culprit.

One thought that might be possible, what we often did back in the old days. Drop the pan and look at the bearings. It may be possible to replace a bearing and replace an oil pump and have a positive outcome.

I highly doubt you will be able to trade this off as it is. The likelihood of a dealer giving you anything close to fair trade value is next to nothing. Zero oil pressure and a rod knocking is not something they want to invest in, and they take the repair costs of the trade-in value

just another option for you. Have you asked the shops about this?

This is really helpful! Thank you, I appreciate your information. I have talked to the shop about this, and we still believe this could potentially be an option. I’ll be in contact with them today and I’ll ask more clearly about where we are on that and all the “what’s” and “whys”. Posting on this forum was really helpful, as it has given me a better idea of what can/can’t work and the questions I should be asking! again, thank you! I’ll keep you updated.

You know they will take off the costs off the trade in value

yes, that was a typo. I typed, unless and it should’ve been and. They will certainly take the repair cost off the top of the trade-in value. They might not even get to a fair trade-in value because of the fact of having to deal with the repairs and sitting on the vehicle while the repairs are completed.

    trade-ins are almost always a lose/lose situation

you are correct, most large dealers don't want another project,,,, the biz is turn-n-burn. They have a list of people (usually techs out back) willing to pay cash for the next junk trade in that needs a motor or a transmission. More than likely they will act like they are doing the customer a favor by giving them less than a $1k trade in, for a vehicle that is probably worth 2-4X.
My buddy is a tech and is on many of these lists,,, has been doing in for over two decades. He knows the pecking order of the list, and has cash prepared, and is ready to take any major brand (no Hyundai, Kia, German) without major body damage.
