I’d press Toyota to help out on this for you… though even if they cover 50% or all parts, you’ll still pay the other half or labor etc and it won’t be cheap.

I like the idea of a low mileage motor out of a newer taco. Direct swap over. Believe these motors go for around 5-7k used, and you should be able to find a shop to drop it in for a few grand. Will be far cheaper than the stealership, likely even if Toyota helps put.

Good luck… sucks all around. My truck is at 91,750 right now so can feel your pain.

edit… you can search for a motor at www.car-part.com. It’s a nationwide search at salvage/junk yards. Likely someone has a motor close to you in a totaled Tacoma.

I would try to sell it out right and then take that money and get you something else to drive. There is aways someone out there looking for a project to make some money off of. May not make a lot of money from it but i think you do better than the dealer will give you. just my 2 cents and good luck hope it all works out for you.....

Yeah @Buttskevin21 would be an awesome solution if OP was close by (PNW). Also I think @Buttskevin21 is currently off to Moab?

So you were hit with a random anomaly... a mechanical failure that resulted in the loss of the engine. Sorry to hear but this is possible with any mechanical part. That is the reality of vehicles. It sucks when it happens.

Now rebuilding a 3.5L... these blocks are not rebuildable. The have very little room for boring the liners and relining it would be too costly. So I would be very skeptical of any rebuilt engines on offer...

This leaves new or used as options. New, well. That would be so costly, you might as well look at a new truck...

So used, a quick look on Car-part.com, there are quite a few used engines across the country. On Craigslist, in my area there is a 47,000kms engine listed. This will most likely be the most cost effective way to go.

Look for something that offers up a decent warranty on the part. A good auto recycling company will offer them. Then find a quality shop to do the swap. Not the dealer... unless you are fine with the high labour costs.

Realistically this issue can happen to any engine... even the 4.0L that everyone thinks is indestructible... o_O

Good luck, I hope you can get this worked out in some way that is less painful than it already is...

i am sorry to read this happened. i am curious what brand and weight oil was used?

i am personally not aware of issues that would cause this but your statement above piques my interest - if there are tons of service bulletins for oil pressure and sensor issues, how do you think yours missed having this work done?

i am going to assume the truck if paid off.

as you likely already know, this comes down to a financial decision. it seems you drive about 13-14K miles a year. if the truck is otherwise in good condition, i would drop in a used engine and plan to keep the truck another 8-10 years or longer.

if you think the use of your truck is going to change in the future and you will be driving more miles, i would lean towards selling it with full disclosure of its condition and buying new or certified used.

    i wish you the best.

Curiously I missed that part of OP's post... I looked up TSB's and I can't find a single complaint on oil pressure related issues...

If this were my situation, I would stop any further troubleshooting/repairs and go look for a good used engine with a 30 day warranty. Financially, this is your best option. You really don't want anyone disassembling your engine unless it's a dealer. Again, that is my opinion.

Thank you! I’m currently in the process of talking to some folks at Toyota as they are wanting to try and help…TBD! Depending on what they come back with, a new-to-my -truck motor will be the route I go.

So I actually bought this truck used in 2020 with 30k miles on it and a full service history. There no accidents or maintenance issues reported. Same goes for the time that it’s been in my use. I’ve used full synthetic 0-20. I’m going to assume that the previous owner had seen the bulletins and either decided he didn’t want to deal with it, or just decided to sell for some other reason. Unfortunately, truck is not quite paid off yet. Not much left to pay, but enough that it doesn’t help the situation ha!

Thank you! This is helpful information! I’m currently in conversation with Toyota as they want to help, and depending on what they’re willing to do will obviously determine my decision. Sometimes things happen and I had the “sometimes”. I appreciate your response!

Thank you! I’m in the process of chatting with Toyota now. Once I hear back I’ll be running numbers and seeing what the best option is!

Hopefully you know a few competent shops in the area that can swap the motor over. Not a bad job, but requires a ton of disassembly which takes a lot of time. Keep us posted.

Yea dude that sucks, we all buy these trucks for reliability . Otherwise there is huge engine Ford out there that can tow a tank and drive in rivers.

BTW where are all the 1st and 2th gen users? This is like 100% green light for them to talk trash about 3rd gen as they always do even without the green light

Did you buy this "Certified" from a Toyota dealer by chance?
If so you may have an additional warranty to work with.
