Super sucks. I bought the truck for the reason of “it’ll last forever”…the truck had a different plan but, oh well. I’ve learned a ton in this process and will continue to do so and it’ll all work out! but seriously…I was expecting to get my fair share of trash! Thank you for being a helper and not a trasher!

sus. I wonder if previous owner knew something was wrong and that's why he sold it

There's no way the previous owner knew the oil pump was going to fail 60k miles after they sold it.

    Two options
By a new short block or get a used motor
This does suck but in reality an oil pump can fail at 30 k 50 k 90 k or 200 k and if you don’t catch it immediately ( on most any motor ) it’s done . Most of these items come from a supplier and unfortunately it directly affects the motor itself . Just like a refrigerator, a compressor fails and your usually done

It sucks man. Mine burnt an exhaust valve with 4 months left on the note. I bought a used engine, but what I really wanted to do was set it on fire and roll it through the Toyota dealer's showroom window.

The crazy part is none of this stuff is new on any manufacturer. The thing that makes it hard to swallow is the fact that cars and trucks are big money now ,and used parts are also big money .
I can remember having a cutlass supreme a while back with a blown motor . Some of that old GM stuff 70K miles you were pushing your luck . Anyway …. I bought a junkyard motor and tranny at that time for 750 dollars with 20k miles . Dropped it all in and burned good solid day in my drive way and I was good to go . Things are so different now.

Exactly. The problem is not the failures - those have always happened. The problem is a repair at a dealer these days is pretty much 6K-8K for any internal engine work and 10K-15K for a replacement motor as opposed to 1K-4K for any of that in the past. Repairs cost an astronomical amount which really sucks after also spending 35-50K on the vehicle to begin with (sometimes more sometimes less).

Yes, agreed. An unexpected catastrophic failure these days is very expensive when the original purchase price was out there to begin with. Here in Canada New & used car prices continue to climb.

"Average new car now listing for $67,800 as prices jump by almost 20% in a year"

"Meanwhile, the average price of a used vehicle on AutoTrader was $39,155, a 4.3 per cent rise from the same time last year."

    Article here.

Car parts .com seems like a good idea and then pay a private shop to drop the motor in . Or if so inclined do it yourself. A couple of people , rent a hoist and have a high ceiling open place and it can be done . Is it a pain yes, but it can be done

Yep. Sucks. Best thing to do is either have a good savings account (should have that regardless), and it doesn’t hurt to have the tools and know-how to just go and get another engine and swap it yourself. Obviously that is not always an option for everyone. Also helps to have more than one car so you’re not screwed if your daily goes down.

Different means and methods to solve the problem but it’s just a bad day when your 40K truck loses its engine or any other expensive vital part.

If you’ve got proof of the service history every 5k miles since new, I would chase this up the Toyota corporate ladder as far as possible first before spending any $$$$. I would think they’d be very interested to get their hands on it for an internal inspection.

If not, a used engine from a reputable supplier, installed by trusted independent shop would get my vote....

Even doing it yourself is expensive... I'm in the process of doing that. $5k - $6.5k for a used engine by itself, then any other wear items you may or may not need to replace in the process... and no guarantee it doesn't happen again in 3 months.

Yeah….it is a bad deal all around, even if you get out of it for “only” 6-7K….as opposed to 12K at the dealer. Just something nobody wants to deal with on a truck that wasn’t cheap to buy. Not that it makes it anymore fun to deal with, but at least you hit 230K. A lot of these pop the P11 code at like 40K miles.

I’m subscribing to your thread to follow along.

FWIW, I'd rather it have hit at 40k, then the dealer would've been on the hook for repairs instead of me. As it stands, I'm out of pocket, and the stupid thing laid down before it's even paid off (2 months left on the note). The worst part is, I love the truck - but this experience, and the multitude of others I've seen on here, dissuade me from considering a Toyota in the future.
