This is a bit unusual of a question but does anyone know of really durable markers (as in Sharpie) that leave durable markings that resist erasure due to exposure to oil and other retarding agents? I am trying to make marks on my VVT drums where and on my crankshaft where they need to align with markings on the timing chain (which are on the chain already). There are sort of marks on the drums (but not on the crankshaft) already but it is confusing to distinguish them from some other markings that are also present but not relevant. I tried using a Sharpie but it goes out over time and I haven't even zipped up the motor. Is there something like oil based Sharpie that leaves almost like a thick trace of paint that doesn't erase easily, which mechanics would use?

Steal some of your wife's fingernail polish... Pick any color you wish
Holds up well I used it when I relocated emissions pump and power steering reservoir making room for second battery.

Paint pen. Look on McMasterCarr.com. They are for marking steel and undustrial use. I used one 14 years ago on some equipment. Paint is still there.

I so times use paint markers when rebuilding gearboxes. Seems to resist better than the sharpie but I don't know if it would be something that's would last forever.

For kicks today when I was changing my oil, I took the fill tube off to see what the inside looked like. Toyota used some pretty good paint to mark the chain, I have ~95,000 miles and the marks look like they were painted on yesterday.
