What's an extended interval? 10,000 miles like the manual says? I bought new a 2005 Honda Civic Hybrid and it's manual stated changing the oil every 10,000 miles which is exactly what I did for 258,000 miles before I sold it.

See now you're reaching into the worst part of the internet which is people's opinions as fact. The real facts are in the manual, if your opinion is that you need to do an oil change every 2,500 miles because you tow regularily or drive hard through the mountains or do short trips less than 5 miles to the city and back every single day, you and everyone else can go ahead and waste your time and money to do that. If one guy out of a thousand find sludge in his oil is it more likely that that's the norm or that he's a one-off?

If someones opinion is to do it every 5000 or 3,000 or 2500 go for it, that's their opinion, as a bona fide backyard mechanic. Yes your oil will look a lot cleaner, will it matter? Will you ever know the fucking difference? probably not because most people are going to sell their truck before it makes a difference.

Its not a crusade. Its quoting the vehicles manual to those of you out there who believe the manual is wrong, toyota wants you to destroy your engine, and that 5,000 miles is the right interval. Why? Because they FEEL IT SO. They have no facts. They go on here and say 10K TOO LONG! without any supporting evidence, documentation or anything except their PERSONAL FEELINGS. Whereas 10k miles is supported by TOYOTA and SCIENCE.

If they refuse to do that step, then you can file a complaint with corporate. It's important to get things like this documented on the official file in the event you ever need to make a warranty claim. It's a cover your ass step.

Really? My dealership is Koons in Westminster Maryland, have received very good service from them. When the recalls for both axle leak (mine not leaking) and blower motor, they called me to schedule an appointment. Gave me both TSB for the transmission updates when I asked. Repaired body mount free for me as well. Would recommend them highly. Just my experience.

yeah but your not the engineer who designed the engine nor the motor oil, its just your opinion versus experts in the field of automotive engines and lubrication.

    1. Does extend engine life? By what amount?
    2. Because there is no basis for the choices they are making. I'm really more interested in changing people into being objective thinkers about why they decide something. Get some data, make informed choices. If you want to change your oil at 5,000 miles, at least have some good data on why.

To the OP. You may want to get a sample of your oil shortly. Did you save any from your oil change in that pan, as long as it was never used for coolant you could still send that in? I would be most concerned about the possiblility of coolant in the oil based on the brown goo formation in the filter housing.

Head gaskets can and do fail, and coolant in the oil will cause this appearance and can be very damaging to the engine internals. So this is my suggestion to eliminate that possibility. An oil sample positive for glycol can be used to get a warranty repair. Keep an eye on your coolant and oil levels if you don’t get a sample soon.
Rather than using oil analysis as confirmation bias on oil serviceability, this is a good reason to get one if you suspect a potential mechanical problem, it may not have been the dealer not performing a service, but rather this is an indicator of a bigger issue.

I checked the coolant level and it seems fine. The drained oil has been recycled but there is still a little bit left in the plastic oil filter cap I saved. If other dealerships are willing to run a test on the oil I’ll give them the sample. Otherwise I’ll keep checking oil condition of the new Mobil 1 oil just put in.

And Toyota is on the hook for those statements on when to change oil. Who thinks they would put that in writing, and be held responsible for it, if it was just a ballpark number for whatever weird ass reason?

Toyota dealership covered my Camry's oil changes every 5K miles up to and including, 20K. It was only recently I discovered it too, was prescribed 10k OCI's.
Like a new wife every five years, 5K OCI's make me feel good about myself. Wonder if I can pull it off with the Tacoma. Coming up on 5K...

It stays between the marks. Hardly coming down from full if at all. Definitely not enough to matter.

My truck is older and at 10 000km the oil is still golden/green color, like light olive oil. These engines run so efficiently and cleanly the oil doesn't seem to have to work too too hard.

A lot of people seem to want to do the fewest oil changes they can, with the hope of ditching their vehicle in a few years.

W/ me, I will be driving this truck till Kingdom come. On bad dirt roads. Carrying heavy loads of firewood. I will never turn loose of a running Toyota pickup. "From my cold, dead hands" kind of deal. I don't ever intend to buy another vehicle, ever again. When I'm dead, my old hunting truck is gonna be turned into a Viking funeral, complete w/ fire, strangled slave women and a dog at my feet.

I expect a lot from my engine and transmission, and in turn, I expect to change dirty fluids w/ good quality stuff. People on this site think nothing of spending 30 or 50 bucks gambling, drinking or fooling around. I'm saving my mad money for truck maintenance, petrol and ammo. In that order. If I change my oil too soon to suit the internet, that's a risk I'm willing to run.
Quality 4 cylinder Toyota vehicles make this possible.

My truck is 9 years old and i plan on keeping it for quite a bit longer. My oil change interval is currently every 12,500 miles based upon analysis of my vehicles oil. My oil brand preference is whatever is the cheapest synthetic I can buy.
