Best to google and find out what your options are. They will send you test kits to collect the samples for free and your costs will depend on what you want done. GL

Ive seen some narly practices in the auto repair industry. Always mark your oil plug and oil filter to make sure they actually did there job. Or get a camera. Looks to me like they may have not changed the oil at all the previous times or time for reasons only they know. It is why I do all my maintaince myself. Unless you can prove they didn’t change it and get some kind of extended warranty or free med mat. I’d never go back there. leave a bad review. learn to do your own maintenance. change your own oil with a cheaper DINO oil run it a few hundred miles and then drain again for new synthetic 0w20. Should get a lot of the sludge out.

I had my oil tested by blackstone labs. Look at my report. They say I could move to 12k if I wanted. 20190304_214205.jpg

Agreed, I’ve often times seen the dealer not change filters, not rotate tires, sometimes not do a damn thing.

Exactly. I’m sure it happens regularly just people never notice. Like another poster posted there are YouTube videos of this happening at lube shops to save money. On hidden cameras. I know dealers aren’t exempt

I’m betting they didn’t change the oil and said they did...

I caught discount tires doing that for a rotation and balance. I secretly marked all the tires and low and behold...exact same place on my Jeep when I returned. Scammers!

No offense but I never understood why people don’t routinely rinse down the engine bay. Makes working under the hood so much easier. I’m still trying to convince my dad that it’s safe to do so now that all vehicles are fuel injected.

I don't even hand wash it. It goes through one of those brushed automatic washers at that. Mostly it's because I'm too busy and don't make it a priority. To me, it's just a truck and not a show car. A means to an end.

That being said, I'm actually planning on washing the engine bay this spring along with touching up the sliders.... mostly for the reasons you state.

You are going to want that oil out of there if you intend to keep the Taco long term, or care about the folks that get it after you. Infrequent use and short trips are very rough on engine oil. There is a lot of dissolved water and volatiles that will not get burned off.

Just remind them it is miles OR time. You hit the 12 month mark.

I've been wrenching and driving since 16 years old, and have never seen anything like sludge deposits. My '18 Taco just turned 4K miles and due for the 10K oil change due to time, the oil is still clean looking. However, I want to thank you all for making my mind up not to take my Taco to the dealer, I'm doing my own oil changes as I have always done with my vehicles. The dealers are in it for the $$$ and could not give two shits about the consumer.

I plan on letting the dealer do my maintenance while under warranty. After that it’s all on me.

Yea. I should add that the “miles or time” thing is one of the reasons I stopped going to the dealer that’s 350 yards from my house. Tried to get them to change the oil in my wife’s rav about 1k miles early and they wouldn’t do it. I explained that our short trips (under 5 miles) and use of a cargo box may fall under more severe use and we were going on a trip soon. They still didn’t wanna do it. I offered to pay and they acted like that’d just mess up the toyotacare service schedule. I just said nevermimd and left lol.

They lost 3 brand new Toyota purchases (~$110k in revenue) in the last 5 years and ongoing service/maintenance. Oh well!

This is why I always do it myself. I know what oil and filter are there because I put them there myself. I don’t trust dealerships or anyone really when it comes to simple maintenance.

Im doing my 30k oil change with filter tomorrow(Mobile 1 0w-20 and OEM filter) and sending to Blackstone.......i don't trust my dealer (Tustin)....they tried to tell me i needed new brake pads at 10k, 15k and 20k.....still have like new pedal pressure and push back......i just need to bleed brakes......i am sure there is a video somewhere for that I can use to teach me....i need to have tires rotated and balanced even though they say i don't need balancing.....
