But if the dealers are not changing the oil, how does one really know? Do I need to change it every 5 miles or every 500,000? And based on posts here that research proves nothing.

There are only two things to consider; the facts and then everyone's opinions. I choose facts.

But data or facts are only as good as one wants to present them.

I think your OCI is 10k miles stated by Toyota Corp.

Hmm, I’m about to hit 110k and I think I will send out a sample for testing just for grins before I get it changed.

You guys can do what you want. I’m sure Exxon won’t mind you buying more oil lol.

You could do as someone said earlier, mark your drain plug to verify it was removed. It have my Rav4 tires marked to verify they did rotate the tires, and I also marked my air filters because I know how they like to come at you with a "shop filter" and say yours need to be changed. I can identify my filters and its very helpful if my wife takes it in by herself.

Which is why I choose to discount what some folks are whining/complaining about the 10k oil change as recommended by Toyota. Those are just opinions, nothing more.

    1. A little bit of testing has gone into that number saying it's okay.
    2. I don't want to waste money or resources
    3. It's better for the environment
    4. I have other things to do besides change my oil.

By the same line of reasoning, why don't you change your oil at 3000?

Ultimately, you have data points on your side. The OP you are quoting has no data supporting his recommendation, yet you have data showing 10k is fine.

People who hate on 10k OCI have no data on their side and only go by "feels". Shameful.

I'm planning on keeping the truck for a long time. I'm almost at 70,000 miles. I'm not going to baby the truck; I'm also not going to abuse it. I figured the extra money I save by going to 10K oil changes, I can use to test the oil and give me a heads up when something's wrong. I'm quite interested in seeing how many miles it'll go when using the 10K oil changes. I don't think there is any significant improvement by changing the oil more often. If I get to 250K before needing to overhaul the engine, that'll be fine. I'm thinking it'll go 300K though.

OP, run a can of engine flush (Liqui Moly is my favorite) then do two oil changes 100 miles apart (change the filter on second oil change). That will get most if not all of the sludge out, then switch to 5k OCI.

I think the only bigger waste than changing your oil every 3k is sending a sample of it out for a meaningless analysis.

That's gotta be the dumbest comment heard today. Please explain to me how following the manufacturers schedule will destroy your motor? They have a vested interest in keeping your motor working to at least the end of the warranty, and somewhere beyond I'd say to avoid being bad mouthed out of business. If they had to warranty repair tens of thousands of motors they'd be in a pickle.

What I think is funny about these clowns that spout off about how often they change their oil and posting about their zinc percentage vs the how many ppm of chromium they find, they can't tell you what their LDL or HDL numbers are. Seems to me that some folk have their priorities all jacked up.
