Thanks. Is there a standard procedure to disconnect battery terminals, anything need to be reset after that?

Disconnect the Negative terminal first for removal and when installing hook up the Negative terminal last.

I live in Northern Virginia. The dealer is Koons Toyota at Tysons and it’s probably the largest dealer in this area. Both of my 4Runner and Tacoma were serviced there. Worst service I received from dealership.

Basing your change interval on the color of dipstick oil is a new one for me.

Man, this thread has it all.

That oil does look nasty. I wonder what is going on? Are you going to send a sample?

I use baking soda and water to clean the corrosion off the battery terminals. I also tried some battery terminal dressing as I kept getting the corrosion on the terminals. The Toyota battery sucks. First one died on me at about 35,000 miles and two years. The new one is leaking acid too. I'm not getting it on the terminals, but the battery hold down is corroding from it. I need to just bread down and buy a good battery.

Anyway, as shakerhood said.... remove negative (black) first and install negative last.

OP, you should consider showing the service manager your pictures. Whether they do anything about the tech(s) that touched your truck is a different story and their issue to deal with. You should make them document on your truck's file that this took place and the dealership acknowledges the mishap. Confirm the file was updated to your expectations, and then retain a copy of the updated file notes and images for your records.

That's about all you should expect from the situation.

On my end, I have 1 Toyota care oil change remaining and will use it. That said, I will be marking up my skid plate bolts, filter housing, oil pan drain bolt, and tires beforehand though. I'm curious if my dealership is following through their work. I didn't do that on my first service unfortunately.

I’m not planning to send oil sample for analysis this time. It’s like because they didn’t change the oil completely or didn’t /clean replace the oil filter unit. I’ll keep watching the oil and see what happens in the next few thousand miles. The new oil on dipstick is very clean right now. Hopefully the problem is solved.

You have a vehicle that is supposed to go 10,000 miles between changes. You should have sent a sample in.

The unfortunate truth is that few people today take pride in their work. Whether due to pressure from supervisors to meet time quotes or just plain laziness which seems to be rampant in today's society. I am building a new home currently and finding out many subcontractors doing sloppy work. If you care about your truck, do your own maintenance when possible.

Lol no need to let it drain for 30 min. This stuff come out like water. 10-15 is plenty of time to make sure it’s all out. A few drops of old oil isn’t going to contaminate the new oil. You’ll get more contamination just from it flowing through the engine after several minutes.

    My method:
    • First I have a cheap Harbor Freight OBD connectors that I hook to my 12V fishing battery or 12V DC source like jumper cables from another vehcile. It supplies power to the computer and radio when I disconnect the battery.
    • Remove both the positive and ground cables from the battery.
    • Dip the ends in baking soda water and let them soak for 5 minutes.
    • Using more soda water I use a old tooth brush and scrub the terminals
    • Rinse the terminals and cables and dry everything off
    • Using one of those wire brush terminal tools or sand paper I rough up both the cables contact points and terminal post
    • I then remove and check the water levels on the battery and fill with distilled water over the plates if needed.
    • I have had great success with the felt terminal protectors. Put them on the post.
    • Put the cables back on the battery and tighten down
    • I coat the connectors with dielectric grease
    • Unplug the OBD connector from the computer jack inside the vehicle and you're done.

So are those brown stuff stay in the oil filter cap because dealer didn’t warm up engine before changing oil?

I noticed the rust near the front differential when I was changing differential fluid. Probably because I drove across 2 ft deep creeks a few time before and didn’t rinse the bottom. Should I worry about it and treat the rust with something?

I think it looks like activated carbon or charcoal from a filter. It has that coffee grinds look to it. Like a filter was defective or installed improperly and leaked.

Are they solid particles or little congealed clumps of oil?

Just contaminates that settle in the cap. Very rarely do a lot of people ever clean those unless they start to look real bad. Some guys will hit them with shop clean and wipe them out. I wouldn’t worry as it happens to every vehicle. As for the brown clumps I’m not sure what they are. I wouldn’t say it’s sludge. If your changing your oil like you should, you shouldn’t have any sludge build up. However that doesn’t mean something isn’t leaking and mixing in. Maybe it’s glycol mixing it, or maybe it was just some bad bulk oil or something that was used. If your worried I would change this fresh oil or atleast pull the dipstick at different intervals and see if you see any signs of contamination. If you do, maybe check the coolant level just to make sure you don’t have a head gasket with a small leak or something. Then maybe send a sample out for analysis to see what it is.

Not sure. I replaced the filter cap with a new metal one and left the old one outside to clean it later. Will find it out and update here. I think they are the same thing I saw on the dipstick, although the color looks darker on dipstick.

OP, you really should've ran a can of engine flush to get rid of the sludge, then do another oil and filter change. New oil will eventually dissolve the sludge but at a much slower pace. That's what I would've done, but it's your car...
