So strange to have that bad of a failure without something getting into it like a belt shredding or what not... Usually they just seep or leak oil.

On the bright side it is a quick and easy fix.

    Sum-Ting_Wong ! o_O

I'm wondering if that was punched outwards or inwards...

Looks like a rub mark around the seal...

The rubber in the balancer came apart and the outer (grooved) part was rubbing against the timing cover.

The balancer is made up of 2 metal halves with rubber (damper) in between. often times the rubber will degrade from being soaked with oil and it separates. The outer part of the balancer will walk all over the place when the engine is running. Sometimes they move forward and fall off, sometimes they move backward and scrape holes in the timing cover

Ouch, you don't remember hearing a noise when the engine was started? Seems the event occurred at startup or when the engine was turned off the night before. Remove the oil pan to see if any parts are in there. I don't know welding; i would be inclined to inquire if an alum patch could be welded over the opening.

But those chunks taken out are behind the inner part of the balancer? I could see how if the outer separated it could make those outside grooves, but the chunks taken out of the cover where oil pump gear is????

I suspect something else is going on.

Best case scenario, spend alot of time and several hundred on parts, you pull timing cover, pull upper oil pan, pull valve covers, clean all the aluminum out, inspect everything. Buy a timing cover, put it back together and hope for the best... No idea if bearings where damaged. It works out.

2013 engines are pretty cheap, if it was me, I'd pull the engine and Swap it.

    Edit.....

Thought you had a 2013, I see you have a 2010. Those aren't cheap. I'd still probably end up swapping it if it was me, but I would put alot more Time and effort in first and go ahead and check the bearings first before I pulled the trigger on new engine.
