I've run that shell oil in my tractor when I couldn't find any straight 30w.

Lots of speculation in this thread. There are 3 measures of oil viscosity, Kinematic, High Speed High Shear, Cold Crank Simulator
    https://pqia.org/pqia-viscosity-quick-reference-guides/
Read what each means and then decide what oil you want to use.

Let's look at VOA, Virgin Oil Analysis of 0w-20 and 5w-30 synthetic oils vs 5w-30 conventional oil. I am focusing on CCS, worst case starting scenarios.

    https://pqia.org/valvoline-sae-0w-20-full-synthetic-motor-oil/
    Valvoline 0w-20 full synthetic:
Cold Crank Viscosity at -35°C(norm is 6,200 Max) tested 5,424

    https://pqia.org/pennzoil-platinum-sae-0w-20-full-synthetic-motor-oil/
    Pennzoil Platinum 0w-20 full synthetic
Cold Crank Viscosity at -35°C(norm 6,200 Max), tested 5,396

Now let's look at 5w-30 Synthetics

    https://pqia.org/pilot-sae-5w-30-full-synthetic-motor-oil/
    Pilot 5w-30 synthetic
Cold Crank Viscosity at -30°C (6,600 Max), 3,785

    https://pqia.org/pennzoil-ultra-platinum-sae-5w-30-full-synthetic-motor-oil/
    Pennzoil Ultra Platinum syn
Cold Crank Viscosity at -30°C (6,600 Max), tested 4,871

See how much difference is from brand to brand? Pilot is actually thinner at cold temps!

    Now look at dino 5w-30.
    Sheetz 5w-30 dino
    https://pqia.org/sheetz-sae-5w-30-motor-oil/
Cold Crank Viscosity at -30°C (6,600 Max), tested 6,273

    https://pqia.org/oreilly-sae-5w-30-motor-oil/
    OReilly 5w-30 dino
Cold Crank Viscosity at -30°C (6,600 Max), tested 5,503

    https://pqia.org/peak-5w-30-motor-oil/
    Peak 5w-30
Cold Crank Viscosity at -30°C (6,600 Max), tested 5,712

You can run 5w-30, but if you want to minimize start-up and cold weather wear and noise, use synthetic 5w-30 oils.

This is excellent. Does PQIA update regularly?

SAE weight numbers are trade designations, just like pipe schedules and steel grades. It's a spec that is met, not an absolute value.

Somebody in this thread also talked about the engine being water-cooled so outside temperature doesn't matter? The water still has to dump heat somewhere. If its 120 outside, with the same radiator area, coolant temperature will ride higher (temperature approach is worse). Hotter coolant, hotter engine. Enough to matter? I don't know, I didn't design the cooling system. But not something to just discard because its water instead of air cooled, at least not if you live in a hot area.

Sounds like you got some bad info.

Energy in coal is about .9kWh/pound, gas and diesel are about 13kWh/gallon (~2kWh/pound).
Yes engine temp does change some with ambient temp, but it's not a huge amount. The cooling system is a regulated system so it keeps the engine temp relatively consistent regardless of the outside air temp.

Ever blown up a balloon and then just let it go? That’s how oil threads work.

They do. They changed the website layout. Oil data used to be in tables, now it is in the article format, but it is there.

Again - all the VVT system needs is pressure. It doesn’t need a specific pressure. Whether it’s 30 psi on 0W-20 or 60 psi on 20W-50 (these are drastic examples - not real world), it will work.

Yes, higher viscosity will increase oil pressure slightly, which is a higher difference when cold than warm. The VVT system is not picky, and will work on any of it. The electronics allow the oil to do its thing, pressurized oil then does its thing. No part of the system requires a specific oil for it to work right.

I thought I could save some bucks on mobil1 5w30 too, as it's $5 cheaper than the 0w-20 here for a similar 5 qt jug. Now I'm not so sure I'd use it again. It's just not right for the winter climate here in the northeast.
