I got a 2016 tacoma v6 3.5.. I'll be doing my second oil change at 10k Mark (canadian eh) Mark.. my question is has any one run a 5w20 insted of the recommended 0w20? If so what did you notice? As I'm thinking of switching.

What is your motivation for wanting to use 5W20?

I personally think that's a Dumb Ass thing to do.... Toyota says you should use 0-W20 synthetic.... Why InTheF would you change that..??
Price..???? OK.. I don't want to buy your used truck..

I use to chat with this guy on here from Pennsylvania and he used 5W-20 with no ill effects. That was in the 2.7 but I see no reason you could not use it in the V6.

I'm with ya! Ignore those silly Toyota engineers.

They and the tribologists / metallurgists they consult and test with on stuff like this aren't to be trusted.

    Experiment away.

Most engine wear is in the warm up cycle. 0w oil is closer in viscosity to operating temperature and will cause less wear.

That's a 2016 truck, stick with the 0w20 until the warranty is over, if anything happens to that engine while under warranty and you run oil not recommend for that engine, you might as well kiss your warranty good bye. Just another reason for Toyota to deny your claim.

0w20 is recommended by Toyota to get their epa numbers where they need them to be. It's thinner and gives better mpg's. It is not better for your motor. Oil viscosity should be chosen based on ambient temperature and driving conditions. Toyota engineers are told what to do by the bean counters. Duh!

Got some independent oil lab tests to back that up?

You should just go with what you are told by Toyota and ignore common sense.

A little of this and a little of that.
I think you should switch to Olive Oil. Put some onion slices and cloves of garlic in the air box while you're at it for a really nice smell as you drive down the road.

I'm just kidding of course. But I do like that you're a free thinker.

While your at it, drain the Toyota super long life coolant and put some water in there, since your disreguarding whats recommended for your vehicle.

Do you all really think it makes sense to use the same viscosity in Alaska at -40F and in Arizona at +115F? There is a reason there are different viscosity oils.

If you're talking to me (using the quote feature is helpful), I take it the answer is 'no', you don't have any lab test work to back your claim.

Actually common sense would suggest an independent lab test result could prove/disprove your point.

Show me your independent lab test that supports 0w-20 is the best.
