I don't need the alarm features. Don't want to spend a ton of $$$ on alarm that I don't need.....

I do want 2 way system.

I've installed dozens of audio systems and I'm comfortable removing interior parts from my truck.

What system should I buy, and can I expect to install it myself without ruining my truck????

I've searched and read dozens of posts, but would still appreciate input on specific models and prices.

    Thanks
    Donald

I installed one myself on my old truck(1st gen) it wasn't that hard if youvfollow the instructions.I would say no harder than putting in a new stereo. As to which one to get I don't know I don't keep up with them anymore

Subscribed as I'm interested as well.

I have heard it gets tricky with chipped keys and you have to install a system that overrides it. The other solution (and one that I would probably go with) is to secure the gray valet key somewhere near the column so the ignition is always activated.

With this setup, you can start the car remotely because the column picks up the signal from the valet key. Have heard this is cheaper and easier to install.

I'm considering buying a Viper 5901 system or a Python 991 and only using the features that I need.

I see these systems on some online stores for around $250.
Is this price "too good to be true"?
I suspect that I'd have to add the cost of the key bypass module or just use my vallet key.

    ??????

I do remote start installs for a living.... get either a viper or python system... they do cost a little more but the quality is top notch.... are you planning on doing the install urself?.. if so.... pm me ur yr make and model a nd ur email addy and ill send ya wiring info.... if you are having a shop do it make sure they solder the wires.. that insures no problems down the road.

also make sure they are using a directed bypass module "pkall". so far thats the best bypass i have come across.

you should be able to get a remote start and keyless installed for under $300.

I have a question for you. What is the maximum distance a chipped key can be away from the ignition and still allow a non chipped key to start the truck?

The reason I ask is my valet key was placed somewhere under the dash when my remote start was installed. I assumed that this meant the immobilizer was disabled and therefore I had a normal non chipped key cut as a spare. The non chipped key would not start the truck even though my valet key was underneath the dash and allowed my remote start to operate.

Next I took one of my chipped keys and held it next the the ignition as I again tried to start with a non chipped key - no go. Engine would turn but not fire.

I never could get the non chipped key to start the truck, even with the valet key underneath the dash and another chipped key held next to the ignition.

I'm just curious how the system works. :D

Wow...thank you for sharing your experience. I am listening anxiously as I have heard that holding the key next to the ignition will work.

Did you try holding your other keys to that area? Maybe your valet key is bad.

3" lift, and 265 75 R16 Trxus M/T's enroute. (to be installed in about 2 weeks)
The valet key in the dash is the process our dealer uses. There is a wire run from the key (hidden somewhere in the lower dash) up and around the ignition tumbler. Autostart is the brand autostart.ca we use and find it great. Having it installed is likely a good idea if you're still under warranty, however it does take a tech. about 3 hours to install. we use the 1-way

    Good luck with it!

Yup an the Autostart brand is what is installed on mine as well. We also had one installed on our 2004 Accord, and most recently our 2009 CRV.

This is the first vehicle I had the pleasure of having a remote start, but hopefully not the last!

My Valet key is in the dash in the bypass module. I tried both master (black) keys without success.

I'm not sure if anyone is interested in this as it's a bit pricey ($500) and requires an annual service... but a cool option for iPhone users. Plus, it utilizes Viper systems.

back in "the day" thats how remote starts were done.. a chipped key is placed in a box under the dash.. there is a antenna ring around ur ignition cylinder that when you remote start it.. the code from the key inside the box is sent to that ring and the computer picks it up.... i would recommend taking it to a shop and have them put in a "data" b ypass module... they are very reliable and you will get ur key back... the non chipped key will not start the vehicle.

they should never use the valet key under the dash nowadays.... the only reason they do is cuz its a much cheaper option for them.... 3hours to install?... jesus.. i can do 4 tacoma's in 3 hours.

Stang88. I see you are in KC area. Looking to have a Viper 5501 or 5901 installed in a Honda CRV. Please PM me drameden@kc.rr.com if you are able to do this and discuss price/options. Thanks.
