OK , I broke the law.

94 degrees and I left the Truck running while I filled up with gas. I had 33 miles before running out of gas. After the fill up I'm showing 345 miles before running out of fuel. I normally show 401 miles before running. out. I guess it will read correctly after a few start/stops. Crime does not pay.

 

There is a law about gas miles on a computer?

It’s a stupid rule. Cars don’t explode because the car is running. Anything hot that would ignite the gas is still hot for awhile after you turn your car off. Not to mention all the other cars that are driving around the pumps.

Did your C.E.L come on? Running a vehicle with fuel cap off could throw a code.

 

I've never known that it was against the law. Maybe in some places it is.
As far as the truck's computer is concerned, it does seem to expect that you will shut the engine off while refueling. You have confused it. It'll be OK.

 

It's worse than that. You can't put gas in a PLASTIC gas jug (labeled GASOLENE) , and put it in the bed of a pickup without securing it. The theory is the friction of sliding the jug on the floor of the bed might ignite the gas you spilled on the jug. I break that law every week.
