I was referring to the displacements. It's not anything new for Toyota to put a smaller engine in a truck.

It amazes me how all you guys go bitching about an engine that you know little to nothing about. If this new 3.5 engine maintains all the power and torque that the 4.0 has but gives you better mpg, will you still act like the whiny sissies that you're coming across as? Take a pill and wait for the specs to come out. Heck better yet, wait till the vehicle is available and take a test drive.

Traded the 2015 TRD Pro 6spd Supercharged on a PowerWagon and could not be happier. My 2011 Tacoma with the TX Baja package (Added by me) is still treating me great. My 1985 Toyota never skips a beat.
and while the old 3.4 was good. The 4.0 is way better..

The 3.4 fixed the issues of the 3.0 and graduated from 3.slow piece of shit to good engine, the 4.0 was a step up to great engine :)

I like to think that yes the 3.5 will be great. But I still have my worries, the step up in displacement matched the step up in truck size and weight. The new truck is loosing that step in displacement for a bump in Tech, and Should be good, but until its out who knows!

Putting smaller Engine in a bigger truck is stupid.
If that worked we would be driving Trucks with 1000 HP mopped 50cc engines .:turtleride:

I'm not bitching, lol I am happy for the new engine and look forward to the specs and test driving it!

Only slightly worried about the unknown but more hopeful at the same time :)

I would love if it kept or improved the power and torque and its likely that it will!

Actually that is 100% untrue. Every generation so far since 1979 when the first 4x4 Toyota truck came to the US the engine either maintained displacement or got larger.

This will be the first downsize, but with new technologies it should be a similar bump in performance as every other advance since 1979.

    1979 20r 2.2l
    1981 22r 2.4l
1985 22r/re 2.4l reduced deck height new head, more power and EFI
1986-7 turbo option because v6 not ready
    1988 first 3.0 3vz-e replaced turbo
1989 3vz-e changed slightly still sucked.
    1995.5 2wd got 2.4L 2rz-fe, 4wd 2.7 3rz-fe, 3.4L 5vz-fe first decent Toyota truck v6 engine
    2005 2rz-fe - 3rz-fe replaced with 2tr-fe 2.7L, and 5vz-fe replaced with 1gr-fe 4.0L both great improvements from good engines.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
I have a 3.4, and believe it to be the strongest engine I've ever driven. I feel more confident with it than I did my 2011 Taco's 2.7 4 cylinder. I think it's a pretty safe bet that the 3.4 may be even more reliable than the 22R and 22RE. I talked to an older gentleman who had bought a 2000 4Runner with a 3.4 new when he retired and had almost 400k miles on the odometer at the time we talked about four years ago, he only ever replaced timing belt/water pump every 90k miles, spark plugs, belts, and a few alternators and batteries whenever they were needed. No serious mechanical problems with the engine. I bet the old guy is still driving it around today.

Only thing that concerns me about my 04 Tacoma is the goddamn Achilles heel frame it has.. If I can't get Toyota to replace it before 2019, I'm just gonna save up and have a custom frame built for it by a local fabrication shop that builds high quality durable frames for Jeeps and other off road vehicles. My frame seems to be okay now, but the thing is, the frames rust from the inside out so you can never tell what's going on inside. It was previously undercoated by Toyota before I had it but that crap is peeling off in chunks already.

The 3.4 is a good engine. I would say properly cared for it is as reliable as the 22re, and definitely has more power.

I think the 2/3RZ are the most reliable Toyota truck engines so far, and potentially the 2TR-fe being even better.

They are all very reliable though. So it is hard to pick one.

My gramps had 270k on his 97 when Toyota bought it back, never had any issues. His 1986 before that truck had more that that when he cut it up, never any issues.

His first 2004 broke the crank in half at 90k miles, his current 2004 has run excellent.

My 1985 has had a rough life, its just under 270 now and runs pretty good. Probably going to rebuilt the engine since it has not been done yet. The trans failed at 190 or so.

My 1981 that is a play truck and now on its 3rd engine had nearly 400k by the time it broke the first engine.

My point is, that minus the 3vz-e.. Which is a piece of junk. EVERY Toyota pickup engine since 1979 has been a great, very reliable engine and they get better each gen so far.

I was very partial to the 4cyl variety up until my 1gr, now it just depends on what I am using it for.

Problem here is that many engines that we used to get, were Land Cruiser /HILUX hand me downs, Including 1GR.
Toyota is OK but the truth is beyond Land Cruiser /Hilux line everything else is just as mediocre as every other manufacturer.
3.5 L is not a Land Cruiser hand me down. So comparing to 1GR is like comparing Yugo to Land Cruiser. One was built to last, other to pretend its a real thing.
If You want long lasting truck you want as many items from LC/Hilux as possible.
Engine + Transmission + Transfer case from Rav4/Highlander is not it.

True, many of the car engines have been good, but not as good as the truck engines shared with the Cruisers.

The exception, is Lexus sourced engines like the UZ family.. Refined in Lexus as new Tech, tested and then adapted to truck family including landcruiser and Tundra. Also rated as one of the Best engines by wards, and of course they hold the fullsize segments most reliable title. Or at least have held it for quite some time.

I think the likelihood that the new engine will be closer related to the lexus versions is promising.

Also no way it is sharing a trans or transfercase with hilux or highlander, those are based off car platforms and FWD biased. The 2016 Taco is still a truck so landcruiser or all new are the only real options since the 4runner and hilux already have closely related or same trans parts.

My friend has Lexus with 3.5 L 2gr that was swapped in Georgia because it managed to leak all its oil and self destroy on i95.

The only good UZ engine is one designed for Land Cruisers which is 2UZ and here is why "Unlike its other UZ counterparts, this version uses a cast iron block to increase durability"
Everything that is designed for LC/Hilux line is overbuild . Hence it lasts. That includes 1GR that includes our 750 transmission and transfer case...

    3.5L is not ...

The only thing the new Mexican made Tacoma will have that's on a Landcruiser is the Toyota emblem.

I think the engine will be good and reliable. I imagine tons of people were crying about the 4.0 back in 2004. It's been a solid motor. Toyota knows their niche is making quality, dependable and long-lasting engines. Even if they are not the most powerful in the segment.

The 1uz is an aluminum block, as well as the 3uz but I would not think that the UZ engines are anything but great. There are MANY very high mileage UZ's out there, it is a very common swap engine everywhere but the US and despite the reference of the cast iron block for the 2uz that was in Tundra and Cruiser the 2uz is weaker than the early 1uz in stock with its 4+2 bolt mains.

As for the 2gr, I have not read much about it and the only experience that I have with any of the 2gr family is the Camry. I would hope that it would be similarly done, as in like the 2uz that was based off the 1uz and changed for truck use. But who knows, I certainly do not. I can only speculate and hope.

This could be the best engine EVER or it could be the worst engine in history. Only time will tell. I think it has a better chance of being good than being a disaster.

And yes, it probably will not share any actual parts with the landcruiser. But in the past the mini trucks shared very little with the landcruiser, based off it but not many parts are interchangeable. We got what? front diff from 80 series, that is different but interchangeable, engines and trannys from the Prado, and Tech that was used to make similar things?

What if its a US built? Is that going to be different than the Baja built?
