OK, the 3.5 should be a good engine

Don't expect a V8 in a Tacoma. They will never do it. They would rather put a V8 into a Lexus vehicle where the profit margins are higher then put one into a Tacoma.

It's a damn shame the taco will probably never get the 4.6L V8....what a perfect match of hp/tq this would be for the size of this vehicle. Would love to get the supercharger for the 4.0 to get close to the 4.6 numbers, but $5-6k installed is a little to much for my wallet.

Really hoping the 3.5 kicks @ss....although I'm not holding my breath.

Regardless of all the technology, you can't have it all. If you want 300 hp, you acrid ice low end drivability which even the four Taco has now. Buyers will accept 280 hp from 87 octane, 90% torque at 2k and better mileage.

As far as a v8 is concerned, it's a shame the 4 Runner, overweight as it is, doesn't have a v8..... But a light weight limited tow rated midsize is a waste of engineering. Used mainly for hot roaders, just offer an SC option.

True. It's a CARB ULEV II motor. In a 4400lb Tacoma it can power that with good mpg.

Guys just remember that a lot of the force needed to move a truck at highway speeds is to fight air resistance. Trucks have lots of air resistance.

A larger motor isn't necessarily going to yeild the 21-25 mpg you all keep talking about. I could see maybe the lower numbet combined mileage.

Unfortunately, that's the sad truth. CAFE ruins things for everyone, just so to "save" everyone and everything.

Now that we're onto the side-topic of seeing another engine in the Tacoma, I'd think the 5.0L V8 2UR-GSE from the Lexus RC F would fit the bill of a X-Runner. It also has Atkinson-cycle ability, but that's not important :D

Another interesting fact - this engine also powered the Dakar Rally Hilux. If it can survive the grueling Dakar race, then that's a robust engine in my book.

Yeah, it's a this and that kind of thing, but bigtime torque in the 330 range keeps a 4400lb truck moving along pretty good. I've noticed going from a 2.7L to a 4.0L to a 4.7L I don't have to keep my foot onto the skinny pedal as much carrying the same load.

4.7L with 320 torque carries hills better than the 4.0, that's for sure. 2nd gear with the 4.0, 3rd gear with the 4.7. The Tundra 4.7L iron block and steel bed is 400 lbs heavier, but holds speed on hills better.

I thought about the SC on my 4.0, thought no there has to be someting better than spending that $5k. Researched and found a '05 Tundra.

Not this again... Dude you've had this arguement on several threads. Enjoy your almighty 1st generation Tundra. Let's get back to the 3.5 L.

Yes the 3.5 is less displacement than the 4.0 but I am still optimistic Toyota will make this a solid motor with good power. Downsizing seems to be the trend in all trucks. This change in displacement is obviously much less dramatic than Ford's. You can get a lot of power out of 3.5 liters nowadays.

There's not much to get back to. All I know right now is the '05 Tundra 4.7L A750 5-spd auto smokes the 2012 Tacoma I had. 10.5 inches stock ground clearance is the basic smoke. Silky smooth drivetrain adds onto it. I'm not seeing why people are upset about it. It's straightforward, just plain better stock.

I agree, all you seem to know is how not to shut up about your Tundra in threads that have nothing to do with the Tundra.

I agree with the other posters too. With a bit of tweaking and modern design the 3.5 L displacement will make more power than an old stock 4.0 L. Look at everyone elses downsizing and how numbers are still getting better.

I'm probably one of few people that has driven a Gen2 Tacoma and a GenI Tundra on the same roads for 15,000 miles. There's a few out there, but I doubt they went through 12 US states on both trucks, from Washington, DC to California. Hauled a trailer with both trucks over the Continental Divide about 16 times, and hauled a trailer through desert washes on unimproved roads in Utah, Nevada, Colorado with both trucks.

There's very few of you that have done that, so don't preach to me. I know the GenI Tundra handles all that overall better the Gen2 Tacoma I owned.

Again this has nothing to do with the 2016 3.5 L. You're sharing your OPINION everywhere. Kind of like you have to justify your Tundra to the world... which you don't.

I could endulge your need to rant about a 10 year old truck and how hard it makes you, but I'd rather talk and compare this new engine to something built in this decade to similar standards. 99.9% of buyers won't compare the 2016 3.5 L Tacoma to the service guys 10 year old Tundra sitting around the corner.

I rather compare the new 3.5L 7GR engine vs the 4.0 1GR. No Tundra needed in this thread
