My owners manual states using trans. fluid other than TOYOTA GENUINE ATF WS may cause deterioration in shift quality lock-up of trans.,vibration, & ultimate damage. Can i add any other fluid other than this if a little low. In other words " is it ok to mix ? " Is this a toyota sales pitch to buy their fluid or is their claim real ?

I use Maxlife full synthetic ATF. The original WS fluid in my Tundra had degraded so badly by 100k miles that the tranny started clunking and shuddering. I changed it out with Maxlife and now it's as smooth as butter.

Not sure how you would know if it was low..?
Also i wouldn't even consider putting something else in there.
Is the small price difference worth the thousands a tranny costs?

Well to check if it's low you start the car drive a little(10ish miles) then in park and engine running you get under truck and remove the check bolt on the trans, I believe it's a 5mm allen, if a little trans fluid comes out your good, if nothing comes out your low.

Are you the guy who uses toyota brand enginr oil?

    Not using Toyota oil lol.
I guess I just don't know enough about tranny oils to risk messing things up.
Also there is more to just driving around for 10 minutes. There is actually a specific temperature range it need to be in. The service manual has it in there. you can use a paper clip in the OBD port to have the dash light flash to let you know the temp is within the range the verify correct level.

Since you asked how to check in the first place I thought I would not go into to much detail, if memory serves there was a trim or two that didn't have that at temp light.

Typically NOT ok to mix. Two fluid brands can both be compliant to the WS standard but not compatible with each other. The additives in the two fluids can work against each other.

If doing a full flush, feel free to use whatever aftermarket brand that claims to be WS-compliant (Valvoline Max Life is a good one). If topping up or doing a drain & fill, use Toyota WS.
