I'm an old fart and I've learned over the years that if something seems too good to be true, it usually is. But this morning I happened to be poking around online doing some tire research and I came across this from Wally World:

    upload_2022-9-15_7-25-40.jpg

Wally World is not my normal go-to for much of anything. I hate going into the place. But this is literally hundreds less than I've seen anywhere else. Granted, I have to go to the 265/70R17 size to get this price, but I was considering that anyway (my suspension is completely stock and staying that way so this is the biggest I would go). Also granted that I would have to add about $110 to have them mounted and balanced, but still.....

    My questions are:
    • First and foremost, what's the catch? What am I missing? How can these tires be so cheap? The Cooper Discoverer is a decent tire, one I've been considering anyway. Old stock perhaps? Discontinued tire? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

    • How afraid do I have to be of Wally World mounting these? Anyone have any experience, good or bad?

    • From what I've read in my search the 265/70s should fit fine on my stock suspension without any rubbing, but I'd love to confirm with someone who has them (I have OEM mud flaps on all 4 corners)
    Thanks! :)

I would take tires to a well known shop that do custom rims or a local off road place that do tacoma, etc. In other words places that do good work.

Does it include mounting, balancing, TPMS, road hazard warranty, old tire disposal fee?

Nope. Mounting, balancing, TPMS service would add about $120, assuming Wally World did it, which scares me LOL

Just as a point of comparison, Tire Kingdom near me has the Cooper Discoverer AT3 4S in the same size for $216.99. Obviously not the same tire but it's as close as I could get. Exclusive to Wally World perhaps?

Also look/check the manufacture date. If you burn through tires new old stock may be a bargain.

I only drive about 7,000 miles a year so I don't burn through tires. Old stock would be bad for me.

    Oh look, another mod....

The catch is (probably) this: That tire model/size is exclusive to Walmart, thus giving them the pricing edge. Walmart also buys in massive bulk and can pass that savings on to customers. My advice would be to call Discount Tire and get them to price match that tire, or ask them what they charge to mount and balance them. I bet it would be less than $120.

Sounds right. I have run several sets of Cooper Discoverer AT3 (at around the price you are showing) with zero problems.

    Two things:

One, I have found that out of all the possible tire sizes that can mount onto the Tacoma, 265/70-17s seem to be the cheapest. I don't know why it do, but it do.

Two, sometimes a fluke happens and someone carries a good tire for dirt cheap. I made this mistake once, I found a set of wildpeaks for the same price ($125 per), with the caveat that it has to be installed at a Sears. My first challenge of course was trying to find a Sears that, you know, was still occupied by living human beings.

Good lord they botched the job. They boogered my rims, couldn't balance worth a damn, tried to tell me that my alignment was dangerously off (I wish I kept that sheet, rather than admit that they couldn't place a sensor worth a damn, they instead doubled down that both toe and camber were actually +9 and change because the machine said so). I was honestly surprised that they could operate the air compressor. I had to take them to DT and have them fix the entire job. They were good tires with a new date of manufacture stamp. But the install was done (attempted) by a bunch of drooling goons.

Next time, I'm taking the bargain price and having DT match it on the front end. It'll be better that way.

I've heard lots of folks liking DT. Unfortunately their location closest to me is 50 miles away. Our equivalent chain in these parts is Tire Kingdom (part of NTB). Tires you buy there can be serviced/repaired at either a Tire Kingdom or NTB location. Your Sears story is what I'm envisioning at Wally World. Probably about the same caliber of goon.
