Sorry... noob question, but what the heck is this for? Can I mount something there? There’s a hole under the plastic so I want to put something in it....

It's where the bed lights go. It's not a mounting point.

You'll need the OEM part or something that you can fit in there

Is this on all 3rd gen years/trim levels that it is prewired? These would be very useful this time of year.

It's literally just a light that fits flush with the connector behind it. But yes, OEM Toyota.

An online toyota dealer parts site says fitment is 2012-2020 for the OEM LED bed light (P/N 00016-34187). I don't think I have the cutout in my bed, either. I wouldn't be above making a hole if there was wiring ready to plug it in.

2016 service manual does not show any bed side lights, only cargo light I can find is the one integrated into the center brake light on the cab. Maybe it was an add-on for 2019+ but it just splices into the existing wiring loom with a connector, so any 3rd gen can accept it if there is a place to mount it?

You can add it, just like any of the bed cubbies... it just doesn't have the hole precut for you. You gotta do that:sawzall:
Edit.. I can't say for sure if the wiring is there or not for plug and play.

Yeah, the plug and play part with the electrical is my only real hangup. I don't mind wiring, but i don't want to splice into the oem harness and have potential failure points added, or a place for moisture to get in. Making my own plug to piggy back on the existing wiring would be quite the unsdertaking as far as sourcing the correct connectors and then ID the wiring.

Only aesthetic mods so far Leer 180 cap & Clazzio covers on order.
The bed lights in my new '21 TRD OR are wired to a switch in the dash. Can be set just like the dome light: Off-Door-On. If you splice into the taillights you won't likely have the ability to turn it on & off. If your taillights are on, the bed lights will be on.

I just looked at the instruction manual online, looks like it may be plug and play into the taillight area on the 2020's only. Other years you need to run the wires up to the kick panel at the drivers feet. Someone please correct if wrong.

The 17's bed lights are in the 3rd brake light housing with a switch on the left driver panel next to the useless cubby.
