0w20 is used on newer toyotas as it give slightly better fuel economy to meet CAFE from what I understand. I dont think its better for the engine, seems like it would be opposite.

I get mine tested periodically and they always say i could go a little longer. The last time i was tested For my blue FJ Blackstone recommended i go to 7500 miles. I was at 6500 on Mobile 1 Syn 5w30 high mileage with 230k miles on my FJ Cruiser. But hell Im sticking where im at. Its not very much $ when you do it yourself. I buy oem filters by the case online(around $40 for 12 i think?) and buy mobile 1 truck and suv at Tractor supply for like $25 for 5 gallons for the Taco.

interesting to read a 12 year old thread and see not much has changed.

i use Amsoil gear oil, but havent made the switch for engine oil yet.

Thank you for the great information. I do know you can go higher mileage, with synthetic and there's better blends, temperatue ranges etc. I confused 0w20 with the 4L, when reading about the 2.7L using that and synthetic.

Yes I am aware of this. 2.7L uses synthetic 0w20. I have edited my prior posts with my errors.

0w20 was developed so politicians could pretend the polar bears are being saved by getting 1 more mpg.

Somewhere I have a picture of the engine in my 98 T-100 with one of the valve covers removed. I was replacing valve cover gaskets at 221,000 miles and the inside of that thing was SPOTLESS. I was amazed at how clean it was. I always ran Castrol GTX 5W-30 conventional oil. I don't know what it gets now but my nephew is driving it in Des Moines and several months back, he texted a picture of the odometer with 308,000 miles on it.

I had a similar experience about 3 years ago when I changed valve cover gaskets on my father in law's '03 Dodge Dakota V6. This vehicle spent nearly it's entire life on SuperTech 10w-30 conventional.....though I did switch it to SuperTech High Mileage synthetic 10/30 a couple of years ago. Valve train was utterly spotless. Zero varnish, sludge or deposits.

My FIL passed 6 months ago. We sold his truck to a mechanic who said he was happy that it had regular OCs with SuperTech and that was what he used in all his personal vehicles. He said expensive oils are just wallet drainers.

People get way too worked up about oil. Blackstone laboratories proved some time ago that they could find no measurable difference in engine wear between brands.

We live in the age of great modern oils....conventional or synthetic. If you want to use a more expensive brand, then try to find it on sale or with rebates. Otherwise, use what the vehicle is spec'd for and change when they recommend it.

There are several 0w 20 "synthetic blends" available, Havoline, Motorcraft, Honda, Pennzoil. "What oil to use" threads everywhere, Wish someone would start a thread "The oils not to use", with reasons. I've always thought any oil that meets the mfg. specs. & standards for the vehicle would be fine. If there is something we should not use, that would be very interesting.

I used to change my oil every 6 months (in the spring and fall regardless of mileage) but I just read the manual in more detail and it says to change the oil once per year... I usually use Castrol 5w-30 synthetic from Costco.

I've never had issues putting in all 6 qts. The crankcase can handle it. But, I also use the larger filters, Wix 51516 and 51515.

I just recently bought a 2011 Tacoma V6. CarFax says oil changes have been at Toyota dealers, but I've always done my own.

Anyone know what Toyota dealers use for oil changes for 2011 V6 engines, dino or synthetic?

    Thanks.

They use the cheapest bulk oil available in their area.
