Yup. If you change your oil when you get the maint reqd light your engine will stay healthy no matter what brand oil you use.

What would be better for the longevity of the engine though? Synthetic or conventional oil? And if you put synthetic can you switch back to conventional?

I use synthetic because it’s cheap either mobil1 if I’m feeling flush or Costco brand by Warren labs. Both good oils. As an aircraft mechanic I know jet engines went synthetic years ago, what’s it worth to you?

You can go back and forth. And you get longer intervals with synthetic. Use what the manual recommends. High mileage maybe talk, but other than that? Meh. Always trust the manual and just stay on top of maintenance

Canola oil and I stuff paper towels into a gutted filter.

    Change it every 1,000 miles.

Had my Taco's chakra adjusted and it runs like a dream.

There is a thread with a link to a YouTube video where the guy, (Tacomaholic?), was talking about a small leak at the rear seal I believe. And he found documentation stating not to use synthetic oil.

Lemme see if I can find it...

    Edit: this video.

Synthetic vs conventional video is very interesting. I'm going to check the owners manual to verify. May be switching back to conventional on the next oil change.

Yeaaaaaah, I’m going to go with the multi-national oil companies with billions of dollars invested and the worlds top engineers who say “synthetic oil is compatible” over a YouTube video desperately seeking clicks.

Most US “synthetics” are Majority Group 3 or GTL (group 3+) base stocks which don’t even qualify as “synthetics” in europe.

Modern “conventional” ain’t your daddy’s group 1. It’s ALL a syn blend to meet the new GF6 and SP standards (and was even for SN+).

So let’s be clear, even today’s “conventional” Branded oils contain group 3 Or group 2+ base stocks to meet the modern demanding standards of GF6 and SP, and have even for a few years now.

Use whichever you prefer but I am tired of the absolute garbage that gets thrown around here about oil. It’s 2020 people.

edit: just to add, we are talking about the 1GR-FE and 2TR for Pete’s sake. These have been proven to run for hundreds of thousands of miles on a wink, smile, and occasional Oil change with baby oil.

change your oil on a reasonable schedule with the appropriate “synthetic” or “conventional“ for that interval, and don’t worry about it.
