Well good luck with that! I see my inexperience can't possibly compare with your extensive knowledge of these trucks!
Well it's off to the Mall with my crawler!

TRD didn't call it a snorkel precisely for this reason...they knew people were going to try dumb shit like this regardless and needed to remove any liability on their part.

I agree! Not as basic as I described.
But the fact is that the breather allows fluid movement both ways due to thermal expansion. it prevents the pressure from blowing out the seals on the axle.
It can suck water into the diff. it won't be a lot. but repeated over time it can cause issues.

It would be interesting to attach a calibrated vac. gauge to a rear diff, bring the aprox 4qts up to regular operating temp say 160-190F, submerge diff/axles in surface water 45-65F, and plot the vacuum over time.

Well see that’s the thing. It may or may not be 4-5 feet deep. There may or may not be a current. Thee may or may not be a hole big enough to hide a tow truck. That’s the thing about flooded areas. They are an unknown and by they are so dangerous. A lot of people have died driving into flooded areas b cause they assume all those things you just mentioned. The main commonality in those situations is that some one else invariably is or feels like they are obligated to try to help them. Their dumbassaery puts innocent people at risk.

Who said anything about water coming in through the one-way breather? You are correct in that the rear diff breather is one-way. It lets hot gases out. The issue arises when your hot diff becomes suddenly submerged in cool water. Because the breather is one-way, this creates a vacuum which can draw water in through the axle seals. Not the breather. The breather mod simply replaces the factory 1-way breather in the rear with the same 2-way breather that comes from the factory on the front diff. This allows the hot gases to escape just the same and it also allows air to enter the diff when it encounters that rapid temperature drop. People extend it as to not allow water to enter as well (once again because you are replacing the one-way with a two-way). Please educate yourself before you start talkin shit.

I don’t know, discussion of snorkels and diff breathers...

It’s one thing to call the driver in the YT video a dumbass and another to call the members in the thread dumbasses and telling them to STFU.

Sure, there’s shitposting but no one is being a jerk to anyone else in the thread.

Not sure but I do know there is a huge difference between a system that is sealed for water and another for dust.

I was going to relate the story about how back in the 80’s, when I was a young buck in the army, I drove my tank into a submerged tank ditch in the middle of a river, but it’s a whole thing and really don’t have the time (really I’m just too lazy and no one would b interested anyway).

But the gist of the story is that the tank ran for around a half an hour to forty five minutes or so submerged up the turret before finally sucking in a ton of water and seizing up. It took a full three days to get it out of there. They were never able to fix it right. It continued to have electrical problems after they cleaned everything up. They finally ended up canabalizing it out for parts a few months later.
