Ironically, many drivers rescued from flood waters report that they were in a hurry to get home-- to safety -- as a reason for tempting the danger of driving into water. However it looks, and despite what car commercials depict, driving into flood waters may be the most dangerous things one might ever try considering the following:

Most cars will float (and be swept away) in 18-24 inches of moving water. Trucks and SUVs are not much better with only 6-12 more inches of clearance. Creeks and rivers can rise very rapidly and the road bottom can also wash away making the water much deeper than it appears.

Once cars are swept downstream they are will often roll to one side or perhaps flip over entirely. The driver has a few precious seconds to escape the vehicle. In fact, many drivers panic as soon as the vehicle submerges and are found later with their seat belt intact.

As the interactive segment above explains, if and when a driver escapes the vehicle, there are many more extreme dangers in wait.

A couple years ago while on patrol a friend and I were almost caught in a flash flood with no warning. We came around a blind curve and a washout in the Road had turned into a torrent that would have swept a semi away. Luckily I was able to stop in time.

It wasn’t even raining where we were. The rain had fallen miles away but somewhere at a higher elevation. If you've never seen one, or live in an area where they occur, it’s hard to believe they actually happen with the force they do.

I give the guy props for trying. Made a good decision reversing back to shore.
Hopefully the guy is a helluva swimmer with life jackets in his truck.

I tried crossing a river in my 2012, decent current. Turned it around when the water got somewhat close to the wheel level, but my back bumper was almost lost and the tow hitch didnt make it:/ Learned my lesson the expensive way

We all know stickers give you more horsepower but it's a little know fact that stickers also give your truck the ability to navigate deep water crossings with ease. This guy apparently didn't have enough stickers

 

2 light bars and a set of ridged fogs and he would have navigated that like a master.

 

Two light bars and some fogs and he could navigate crossing the grand canyon

 

Mine have helped me immensely all while the winch goes unneeded lol
